Yesterday, we upgraded the Mohican Board enabling it to utilize a MS SQL database rather than the MS Access 2000 database we had been using. The Board needed to be shut down while the data was converted to avoid loosing any posts made in the interim.
For those who care - the old Mohican Board simply created HTML pages for each post, in effect a web page. When we switched to Snitz Forums in May '02, a database was utilized to store - and then call - all information. That's what A[ctive] S[erver] P[ages] does. It is a software system - in this case a board - that is interactive with the server & retrieves data as necessary. Anyway, we were using Access, which any of you who use Microsoft Office are probably familiar with. Same thing.
Access works fine, but has its limitations as the database grows. Thus, though not needed at this point, we switched to SQL - which I think stands for Server Query Language, or something like that. It would have been inevitable. This database will allow the Board to grow without performance loss. So they say ...
All functionality should remain the same, if it works at all. Some of the code is written specifically for Access which is why I anticipated a glitch or two, but so far all seems well to my eye. Again, if something seems out of whack to you, do let us know right away.
The big test remaining is will it allow folks to register? If no new members appear in a day or two, I'll run a test registration over the weekend sometime.

I don't think it's your imagination. More than anything, your Internet method of connection [dial-up, broadband, etc.] will determine the speed. Other factors do come into play & one of those would be the database type in a forum. SQL will not slow it down, that's for sure! As the database continued to grow in size, the difference would be even more noticeable.

It may be just my imagination, but I think the board pages are loading faster... which on my home computer is a Good Thing (to quote Martha Stewart)!! <grin>
On another subject, I just noticed that I have a new title! I got out of the Tavern, and became an Elder! I don't remember seeing that title before.
I'm very glad it doesn't say "Mohicanland Elder-ly" or worse... "Mohicanland Senior Citizen"!!
