Posted - January 10 2009 : 5:00:38 PM I just read a brief news item about this: The U.S. Mint will be producing a series of $1 "Native American" (their term) coins, with the portrait of Sacajawea on one side and on the other an illustration of some aspect of American Indian life. The 2009 coin, which hasn't been released yet as far as I can tell, will illustrate the "three sisters" of American Indian agriculture -- corn, beans, and squash, planted together.

I don't collect much of anything, but this series will be too cool to pass up. And I've already learned something: I had thought that the "three sisters" method of planting was unique to the Northeast, but no, it originated in central Mexico and spread from there.
Learning of this dollar coin made me wonder whether any of the 50 state quarters (I am collecting those) made any reference to American Indians. It would seem only fair, somehow. I looked at the state designs here:

Unless I missed something, the answer is, only this one:

Thank you, New Mexico! I recognized the symbol as Indian but wasn't familiar with the Zia reference, so I looked around the Internet and learned that it's one of the many Indian pueblos scattered across the northern part of the state.
Actually, if we use the term "Native American" rather than "American Indian," I guess we can add Hawaii to the list:
