Under Mountain Men - I ordered "Journal Of A Trapper" by one Osborne Russell. He was a very literate trapper, not all that common actually. So far, one good book. Somehow I doubt he'd fare very well in rush hour traffic today, - but then again, he may have a solution for that also. ;) . http://www.narrativepress.com/ |

Red, I would also really, really like to locate an account such as you asked about. Because I portray such a woman, I would sell my second-born child (well, maybe not so much since she's no longer a teen-ager) to locate something like that. If it exists, I don't know about it yet. |

Posted - January 30 2008 : 07:44:13 AM That looks interesting. I might look into the memoir written by a woman who grew up in Deadwood. Wonder if she has anything to say about Al Swearingen and Sheriff Bullock, the real people on whom the HBO characters were based?
And not to re-direct the thread, but does anyone know of a good first-hand account of a woman's life in an army encampment or fort in the F&I War? I saw a memoir by a Civil War officer's wife on the Narrative Press site, but nothing earlier than that. If not a first-hand account, then a good source for women who were employed by the army or traveled with their husbands? I've been reading a lot of Cooper lately and am wondering just how plausible some of his storylines are, as regards the female characters. |
