Just as a note, the sub used in this film was also used in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The condition was that it not be submerged, so in Raiders it is always on the surface.

I remember reading something about the movie quite a few years ago, - it was filmed on a real WWII U Boat, tied to a dock somewhere in Europe. As I recall it was intended to portray a "claustrophobic environment", which is what a submarine really is. The survival rate of the U Boat crews was the lowest of any service in the world, - a 80% mortality rate.

I think that's the version I saw. It has a bazillion extra minutes of footage. Okay, maybe not a bazillion. Maybe more like an hour, as Netflix tells me: "Upon its restored re-release in 1997, an hour was added to the original film, which surprisingly augmented its impact."

I just know that, by the end of the movie, I sure as h*** was ready for the guys to get off that submarine! The extra hour really brings home their desperation, I think. I was starting to feel claustrophobic.

Das Boot is one of those rare movies that was filmed in chronological order...so, towards the end, when the crew all look filthy/nasty with that "1000 yard stare" it's because they are really burned out!

"Deutschland, Deutschland, unter alles..."

For a minute I thought you were going to alert us to another showing of LOTM!

I saw Das Boot for the first time a few months ago. I've been learning German, so I was all set to feel proud for understanding a total of about nineteen words in the film. Imagine my dismay when I realized that Netflix only offers the dubbed version. I had a hard time telling the characters apart, because all the dubbed voices sounded the same to me. Even so. . .

Ich habe diesen Film gerne gesehen.

Just saw the post about the dubbing. I guess the original version would've had a lot of similar voices in it too! No help with my confusion, I guess.

Have not seen the movie but here is some movie trivia from www.imdb.com

Originally filmed in German, all of the major actors could speak English. When the movie was dubbed into English for USA and UK distribution, all of the principal actors actually dubbed their own voices into English

I love that movie (ich habe das gern...?)

I saw the original in the theater, in German with English subtitles. Then years later, I saw it on TV, and it took a bit before I realized it had been dubbed into English.

I wonder which version they will show...

Jurgen Prochnow is cool, too.
