Posted - September 19 2008 : 4:44:22 PM I know I'm behind the times, but what can I say, I live on the other side of the world... (might as well be another planet...)
I was familiar with the subject and had heard comments for and against the production and had only read the book a few months ago. anyways I finally watched this on dvd a few weeks ago... terrible, tragic events culminating in the events at Wounded Knee. I thought the movie was very well done, and the actors were all great. Anything that brings history to the attention of more people is a good thing in my opinion. Get people thinking, reading, discussing, finding out more....
I had the privilege of visiting Wounded Knee last month, and let me tell you, you can feel the sadness and horror there still... it permeates the ground and the air... Unfortunately, the story doesn't end there. Native Americans are still suffering today. I applaud the fortitude and courage of all those that are holding on to their culture, language, spirituality, and traditions, and working with their young people to help them find their way.
Charles Eastman's story is an amazing one in itself. I had read about him a bit, but hadn't realised he was the doctor at Pine Ridge when the massacre at Wounded Knee took place. If you get the chance, I recommend reading "The Soul of the Indian". If you can't get it in hard copy, you can download it on http://www.archive.org . Charles Eastman also wrote many other texts just as good as "The Soul of the Indian"...
I also recently went to the grounds of the former Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania and walked through the cemetery there. I was deeply saddened to see several headstones which said only "unknown". I can barely begin to imagine how those children felt as they lay dying in a strange land, surrounded by strange people, language and customs. I pray that no group of people ever commits such horrible acts against their fellow human beings again; let us learn from the mistakes of the past, not repeat them.
Just my two cents...

Posted - May 28 2007 : 12:14:46 PM Okay so who saw it besides me?
It was excellent and great acting by all involved from Adam to Wes, Eric and August even though Wes and Eric did not have too big of parts in the movie. Adam was brilliant as Charles Eastman. What a great actor he truly is and cute as hell. It was very moving and I should not forget to mention Eddie Spears as he was brilliant in this one also. I also happened to see "Flint Sky" from "Apocalypto". I believe he played "American Horse" although he did not have a big part either. It was worth the wait and I will be sure to watch it a few more times. |

Posted - April 07 2007 : 4:34:06 PM You will have to use your powers of persuasion on your friend to watch this one or perhaps have them record it for you. I have not seen any commercials for it yet but am eagerly looking forward to Sunday night and the return of "The Sopranos" and their final season. Maybe they will show some commercials for it then. |

Apparently this is set to air May 27th on HBO at 9PM (Eastern).
I saw a commercial for it the night I watched the last "Rome" episode at my friends' house. It looks pretty darn good, but my friends aren't the type to watch that sort of movie.
So yet again I lament my lack of cable. I miss all the good stuff!
One day I'll have a real job and be able to afford it (or so I tell myself!). |

Posted - September 12 2006 : 3:51:42 PM Aidan Quinn will portray Henry Dawes, a Massachusetts lawmaker who introduced legislation in 1887. He is sympathetic to the plight of Native Americans..
I suspect that August Schellenberg might have the role of Sitting Bull, but don't quote me on that one.:) |
