This seems like a suitably gruesome item for the Halloween season.
In a website for the town of Schoharie, NY (see link) I found the following item for the next generation after the LOTM:
"Lewis Denny, a Native American loyal to the United States during the Revolution, was happily married to a woman he had once scalped."

It must have been a bit strange for Mr. and Mrs. Denny to discuss with people how they met. Do you think that her scalp was kept on display in their home? It gives a new meaning to the phrase "trophy wife".
Another reference and link regarding Mr. Denny:
"During the siege of the Middle fort, a scout under Lieut. Martinus Zielie, captured a Canadian Indian while stealing a horse owned by Harmanus Bouck. Lewis Denny, a French Indian, nearly white (mentioned as having scalped a squaw and afterwards married her), joined the Americans in the Revolution, and remained at Middleburgh. Being in the fort when Lieut. Zielie returned with Ins prisoner, the latter was so saucy, that Lewis, who could understand his insolent gibberish, instantly knocked him down. This prisoner is said to have been an Indian interpreter.- George Richtmyer."

My trying to scalp Betty would be like a drunk trying to skin a live, hungry mean wildcat with a tin can lid. Now.....were I to try to meet anybody ELSE.....there's a good chance she would scalp ME! Several places I can think of. |
