Posted - June 04 2003 : 8:38:43 PM As far as I am concerned the act has some good parts but I certainly don't like the erosions of tribal traditions when it comes to voting.. However accountability regarding government money is a darn good idea. You wouldn't believe how many times native people themselves approach the government because of band mismanagement. It happens at least three times a year in my home province. The misappropriation of funds is a HUGE problems among bands and we need accountability..it's too sad to see that some chiefs and band counsellors are taking lavish trips , have huge houses and the people who are really in need of the funds are still without running water.. Unfortunately this is not an exaggeration but cruel reality right next door to where I live. And I know for a fact that it is not better in Southern Alberta.Sigh..
Yes, our First Nations are sovereign nations..well, to a certain degree because everything is still so connected to the government..hands are still being held..The act does not have the support of the National Chief, Mathew Coon Come and I am sure many bands would agree with him.. Well, something has to happen but gradually with huge input form the peoples concerned..Undoubtedly this won't be an easy task.. |

Posted - June 04 2003 : 7:23:05 PM To me, it sounds like this Act would further erode tribal traditions - very difficult issue; I'm not too sure of the Canadian Indians' situation ... if they are considered sovereign Nations - I think they are, yes? If so, than it is an intrusion, as well. Can't believe it has any support among the native population, but apparently it does. |
