“Each New Day…” By Sgt. Munro

Fort Pitt, The Ohio Country

28 April 1764 / 1130 Hours

Captain Graham was seated at his desk in the Provost Marshal’s Office, reading dispatches. One in particular was of special interest to him, a personal letter from his cousin Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Graham. He was aware that Gordon was due to return home, and that provisional command of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment would be transferred. Opening the letter, Thomas read:

Lieut Col Gordon Graham,
Royal Highland Regiment
Provisional Headquarters
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Colony

March ye 17th of 1764

My Dear Cousin Thomas,
I hope all is well with you on the frontier. As you are probably aware, I have been called home to Regimental Headquarters at Stirling Castle. Lord John has named Major Reid as the new Provisional Commander of the Regiment, and has promoted him to the rank commensurate with the position. I have been petitioning for your Majority, but with no avail. Perhaps, once I am home, I should be able to plead your case to my friends. Then, we can work on getting your brother John his own company.
I truly hope that you too will go home soon. Since your father’s death, and your ascendancy to Clan Chieftain, your people are needy of your paternal love and care. I shall endeavor to help where I can, but I am a poor substitute for their real Chief. Which brings me to another subject, as a Chief, your should have a wife, so that your judgment will be properly tempered with hers. ‘A king needs a queen’, as our elders always used to say. Please do not tarry on this last part, you are not getting any younger.
In closing, I have instructed Colonel Reid to seek you out, upon his arrival to Fort Pitt. He is well aware of your experience in wilderness campaigning, and he will most certainly wish to have you as an advisor on such matters. I have placed my son, Charles, on his staff. I would be forever in your debt if you would look out for the boy. You know how a young Ensign has the judgment of a stag in autumn rut… Till we meet, and raise our glasses again in the great hall of Drainie.

I Remain, Most Fraternally,
Your Cousin,

Gordon

Captain Thomas Graham of Duchray at Fort Pitt

“A king needs a queen”, Graham smiled as he thought. He then set the letter aside and started writing one of his own. This one was to Mistress Francine Straub, a most unique woman. She was not like the inanimate and well-perfumed ladies of nobility, nor was she like a common street strumpet. She was somewhere in between, embracing the best qualities of both. “A queen, perhaps?” Thomas mused, “One never knows what each new day will bring.”

Captain Graham’s thinking was interrupted by a very loud argument coming from the Flag Bastion, located above the Provost Office. Throwing his sword belt over his shoulder, and donning his bonnet, the Captain walked briskly from the office to see what the noise was about. Arriving on top of the Flag Bastion; Graham found Corporal MacIntyre seated on a stack of round shot, paddling a private soldier from the Royal Americans. Kneeling next to Corporal MacIntyre was Private Forbes, who was holding a very shaken mixed-breed dog.

Private Dingle cried, “Let me go, you sodding highland monkey! Ouch, ouch!”

With each swat, Corporal MacIntyre said, “Why, you foul-mouthed little peasant, I will teach you the lessons your father failed to!” MacIntyre then stopped, once he noticed Captain Graham standing in front of him.

“I am to assume that there is a very plausible reason for this, Corporal?”

Dropping Private Dingle from his knee, and rising to his feet, Corporal MacIntyre answered the Captain, “Aye sir, I was making my rounds when I noticed Private Dingle throwing rocks at this poor animal.” He said, pointing to the dog that Private Forbes was consoling, “I apologize sir, I have over-reacted.”

Hi Rose,
To answer your question, "What does Welethee Weekelotha mean?", it translates into 'Pretty Songbird'. I am glad you enjoyed this installment, I figured my tale was lacking in the romance department, so I decided to juice things up a bit...

Sgt:
What does "Welethee Weeskelotha" mean? It sounds beautiful as it is, but if there is an adequate English translation, I'd like to know it.

Good story!
