Posted - March 12 2004 : 12:57:49 AM His agent, anyway! Items signed by Eric will be up for grabs at Ariel's auction, along with some things signed by Adam Beach! Don't know what they'll be...but I'll let ya all know as soon as the package arrives.
My first Gathering was in 2000. Ahhh...what a fun one it was, too. I didn't know much about Ariel's Cabin back then (or Ariel, for that matter). It didn't take long to figure out that this was a very special little girl, and there were some very special people trying to help her and her family. One of those dear people especially comes to mind - our sweet Kate, of course! The ultimate Ariel Auction Organizer! Her hard work and vision are reasons we've carried on this fundraiser at every Gathering since.
I have a vivid memory from that 2000 Gathering (well...I have MANY). But there's one that stands out and will always stay with me. It was Linville Gorge day. We were gathered around the entrance by the gift shop. Rich was standing on a bench in an attempt to be heard (bemoaning the fact that he didn't have a megaphone). He was going over logistics, details about the site, and then he started speaking about Ariel. I was stunned. His eyes filled with tears...he took a few moments to get himself collected, then explained how this baby had such an affect on him - this baby born with no eyes. Well...I was just plain choked up! And I remain that way even now when I think of Ariel and all the challenges she's had in her short little life.
Along with Kate and Rich, so many of our Gatherers past and present are responsible for keeping the auction going. We've had so many awesome donations and generous bids over the years. This June's Gathering is proving to be no different. I've had some fantastic donations so far and am looking forward to hearing from more of you in the next 3 months (YES - JUST 3!!)
Well, guess I'll be blowing out the candles now. It's late, and I'm off on a southwest adventure early tomorrow morning. I just know that when I return, I'll be INUNDATED with messages from all you caring and generous 2004 Mohican Gatherers! Can't wait!

Posted - March 22 2004 : 10:28:31 AM Yes Jayne, you could say it was one good idea leading to another... I was lucky enough to be be the winner of that painting in Bea's Auction:

Beautiful, isn't it...
As 'Ariel's Cabin' has been going for a little while, I thought you and others might like to know how it got started. The story of this lovely little babe (as she was at tha time!) was just so touching, it seemed such a shame to me, for fund-raising to stop with the end of Bea's Auction. After thinking about it for awhile, I thought that it might be possible to raise some funds while everyone was together 'Gathering'. We could 'donate something, buy something'... I put it to Rich, and his response was 'Well...Make it Happen!!!'
The picture that started off the fund raising, hangs on the wall right in front of this desk I'm sitting it.

Bea's keenness to help Ariel and her folks, started the 'fund-raising' thang, and I just took it a little further, by coming up with an idea that could generate funds on a more 'regular' basis... And, as Rich ordered, I got the ball rolling. But NOTHING works unless you have a good, responsive gathering of people who care enough to make it work. As far as I am concerned, though the idea for Ariel's Cabin', originated at this desk o' mine, inspired by that beautiful painting hanging in front of me, it has ALWAYS been a 'Mohicanite' project. You can work as HARD AS YOU LIKE trying to get the organising done, but in the end, it's MOHICANLAND taking part that ACTUALLY MAKES IT WORK.
Okay... I ADMIT!! I (unashamedly) couldn't pass up the opportunity to ... 'encourage'... folks to help Ariel's Cabin' this year! It IS a very worthwhile thing to do... |

Posted - March 21 2004 : 1:54:56 PM Sorry for the belated reply. Just back from a week long trip to AZ. Thanks for setting me straight about Bea's most important part in Ariel's Auction! A bit before my time of being involved...but I probably knew at one time. Sorry Bea!

Posted - March 15 2004 : 05:36:49 AM Like I said, kudus all the way around ... couldn't have happened without any of you. Not to forget, as well, Karen W., Kay, and Patrick - all of whom will be assisting this year.
Ah, the GOOD side of people! I LOVE it! |

Posted - March 14 2004 : 4:02:55 PM Rich, you're forgiven..:)and ..thanks, Lainey! It was basically team work between me and TGATL..it wouldn't have been possible without her.. I am very happy to see that Ariel will never be forgotten and I am also thrilled to hear that some actors will be donating some items! Awesome!! I had the chance to meet Ariel and her family many times and knowing them truly enriched my life! They are wonderful people! I actually ran into the little one two months ago at our library. She was there with her therapist! |

Posted - March 13 2004 : 06:33:26 AM Excellent point, GAT One - and oft overlooked ... even by me. Sorry Bea! The origins of this whole thing are something I forget ... indeed, it was Bea who began this project ... Good show all around!
In any event, this year with contributions from Wes Studi, Eric Schweig, and Adam Beach - along with those donated by us, the Gatherers - it figures to be an extra special auction! |

Posted - March 12 2004 : 11:03:19 AM Ah - and we mustn't forget Bea! It was Bea who first brought Ariel to our attention here, and it was Bea who generously donated the painting that launched that first on-line auction that launched that first Ariel's Cabin [through the good graces of Kate's hard work] that launched that tradition [continued through the good graces of Jayne's hard work] that launched the continuation of love & charity [through the good graces of everyone else's generosity] - all for little Ariel!
