Posted - May 06 2003 : 5:43:10 PM Little Ariel was to undergo surgery for expanders but instead suffered a major setback. When Mom Lori was taking Ariel for a hair cut she noticed that her head was swollen. Her head has grown and the scalp separated from her skull. Fluid has built up inside the little one's head as well and the doctors don't know why. Needless to say Lori is quite distraught. Today Ariel is in hospital, the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, to fix this problem. yes, another surgery..:( I will try to call Lori tomorrow to get an update. In the meantime let's pray for this little girl and her family!!

Posted - May 06 2003 : 9:48:04 PM Thanks for letting us know Bea! Doesn't Ariel have a shunt as result of her neural tube defect? If so, this may just be the result of a clogged shunt that drains the overaccumulation of cerebro-spinal fluid often seen with this birth defect. It is not unusual for these to have to be changed several times over the course of growing up. I will certainly pray that it is something like that that her doctors are very familiar with and can fix straight away. I can imagine how terrified Lori must be. Ariel is definately a special child and it is so sad to think of her facing even more surgeries. The expander surgeries she has can be so painful and I hate to think of her hurting. If she does need a shunt replacement, THAT will make her feel better - Fingers crossed and many prayers to be said for sweet little Ariel!!!
Please keep us informed of how she and Lori and Garrett are doing!!!

Posted - May 06 2003 : 6:26:10 PM This is terrible news to me.
You know, I often thought about Ariel during these traumatic past 7 months. I found it ironic that here we were, allowing our web site to be used as a vehicle to help this poor unfortunate innocent over the past few years, and now we were being hit with a similar situation right in our home. I've always felt sympathy & compassion for this little girl & her family. Now, I feel like I really & truly can understand their pain.
I will pray for all of them |
