... from my childhood is gone.

Fess Parker died today at the age of 85. I feel as though I have just lost a favorite Uncle. I adored that man! Next to Roy Rogers, he was my favorite TV and Western hero. Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, the Dad in Old Yeller, Westward Ho the Wagons....

Awwwwww.... man. I'm sorry to see him go.

Thanks, Fess... for a wonderful childhood full of Good Heroes.

This news hit me pretty hard. Came in from a walk with my dad, turned on a couple of Alamo Soundtracks, and found the news out via Facebook.

Like the baby boomer generation, Fess Parker was my hero, too.

"Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee..."--he will be missed.

BUT...his vineyard does produce some pretty good wine.

Sorry to hear this. Daniel Boone was the first show I ever watched on TV.

An interesting interview from the '80's with Fess Parker about the other side of being famous.

He also was the lead in one of Disney's better historical movies, The Great Locomotive Chase. He played James J. Andrews, leader of the Union "Andrews Raiders" that stole the engine General at Big Shanty, Ga., then headed north to rip up track and burn bridges between Atlanta and Chattanooga. His opposite number was the Confederate engineer played by Jeffrey Hunter who hounds them until their capture just short of their final objective. Though filmed in California with later-period locomotives, it generally stuck to the facts of the Raid, including Andrews' capture and execution. Parker was also a strong supporter of the NRA, and a better actor than is usually given credit for.

It was during either filming of Last of the Mohicans or The Alamo - the Price of Freedom that several of us were discussing the effect of Fess's Davy Crockett on us personally. Despite its many inaccuracys and gross generalizations, without it we agreed we probably wouldn't have been there as reenactors, gun enthusiasts and collectors, or movie extras!

Can't believe Mr. Parker has passed. There was a TV ad for his Fess Parker Resort that I saw just the other day. It was good to know that he was alive and well ... and now, he's not.

Good ol' Fess, - yes, I remember him as Davy Crockett, always enjoyed that show. Roy was "ok" but Gene Autry was my favorite. Good point WW about "Good Heroes", ...

Agreed. What a great guy. He will be missed.
