It is with deep and profound sadness that I must announce to you that our dear friend, Wilderness Woman, has lost her mother. Tuesday, the 2nd of September, she received word that her mother had experienced complete kidney failure...and there were some other health-related issues... and that death was expected within seven days. Joyce did not expect it to go on that long. She and her brother flew immediately to Oregon, where her parents live, but, unfortunately, mom passed quietly in her sleep before Joyce and Terry got there. They had wanted so desperately to get there to say "Good-bye" before the end, but it was not to be.

She called a little while ago to bring me up to date on things. Her dad...he's 90... is remaining strong and understands that his precious wife of many years is much better now. He is strong, and will be OK. She was 89.

Her remains will be cremated and she will be buried privately in Willamette National Cemetery, Multnomah County, Portland, Oregon. Joyce's dad is a WWII and Korean War vet, so her mom is qualified to rest there for eternity.

While my heart hurts badly right now, my mind is at peace for Joyce and her family, knowing her mom's suffering is over and she is in the arms of her Lord.

Please remember them all when you say your prayers tonight. Joyce will be back home on the 16th. In the meantime, I know she would appreciate any Private Messages you might want to send her.

I have Posted this information with her permission.

Joyce,
I am so sorry for just now replying. I haven't been able to come to the board lately, except for one time and I didn't see this posted, but I was only on for a few minutes.
Like the others, my stomach started knotting up when I started reading the post, and even though I am truly sorry for the loss of your mother, I am so glad that you are still with us!!!
I am sure that your mom is in a better place now, where there is no more pain. We all love you!!!!

Love,
Kay

Geez Louise, Seamus! You even scared me!!!

However... I really did need the giggles I just got from reading the reactions of some of you. And I also got some tears, as I realize, yet again, that all of you (many of whom I have never even met in person) really do care about me. It truly does warm my heart. Thank you so much to you all for your concern, your thoughts and your prayers!

I am, indeed, back home now, and trying desperately to return to my normal routine. It is not easy, as thoughts and memories of my sweet Mother keep surfacing in my mind and heart. When you are fortunate enough to have them for so long, you get complacent and think you will have them forever.

As Seamus said, she was 89, and had been experiencing some health issues over the past few years. She was having memory difficulties, joints that had deteriorated badly from arthritis, and breathing problems that were a result of a year-long battle with tuberculosis when she was 12 years old (She had only one lung! The damaged one atrophied away!).

But, even with those problems, she was still enjoying life. She and Dad were still going out for lunch several times each week. In fact, they had just gone out to eat on the Friday before she died. We feel that her kidneys just finally decided that they were tired, and simply quit working. After that, it did not take long until her heart also decided to give her final rest. I am so grateful to God for taking her quickly and gently. She did not have to linger and suffer with a long debilitating illness, as so often happens with the elderly.

And she is at her final rest in the arms of the Lord she loved so much and served so well. She was the church organist and pianist for many, many years, and enriched many lives with her music and her beautiful playing. Her love of music influenced me greatly during my growing-up years, and I can still hear some of her favorite classical and popular pieces she would play.

Dad has been very strong through this. He is 90, but looks and acts like a man 15 years younger. He realizes that he will be lonely and that the apartment will seem very empty. He had taken over doing everything during the past 5 years, and did it gladly. This man of The Greatest Generation, who went to two wars and provided a good living for a family through the 50s and 60s, had to learn how to boil water and do laundry! And he did it. He was a patient and loving caregiver, doing everything possible to make Mom's life easier. I am so very proud of him.

Yes, we will miss her. But we have so many wonderful memories of her that fill our minds and our hearts. She will always be with me.

Again... thank you all!

Love,
Joyce

I am so sorry to hear about this. Please, if you speak with Joyce, pass along my condolences. Losing a loved one is always so hard, even when you know they're not long for this world.

Thanks, Caitlin....will do.

Thanks, Irish.

WW will be home on the 16th. I expect her to be calling me soon, as she has no PC out there to use. I will pass on everyone's kindness and concern to her.

Add mine too, Seamus. Having lost my mother last October, I can certainly say that I know how she feels, and that I do hope she finds comfort during this trying time.

Rich & Obediah,

I had the same reaction. My heart literally jumped into my throat.

Joyce, my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. You're strong and I know that while all of this will be hard, you'll be able to take it each day at a time.

All the very best,
Wade

Seamus, you scared the living daylights out of me. I had noticed Joyce had not been around these past few days, and as I read your first sentence ... well, I can't even say it, but a chill ran right through me. Weird as it sounds, the rest was almost a relief.

OK ... I'm composed now. Thank you, Mike, for letting us know. I will get in touch and will be praying for her and her family.

I had exactly the same feeling...and she (& her family) will be in our prayers...

Sorry, Rich, for scaring you, didn't mean to do that, and thanks for your caring and kindness.

GG, and to you, too, for yours........

She will be touched.

I am so sorry to hear Joyce didn't make it in time to Oregon. I'm sure her Mom knew she was on her way. Even when suffering ends, it is never easy to say goodbye.

My prayers may be counted on for Joyce and her family. Thanks for letting us know. Mike!

Sad news indeed Seamus, - I knew her parents were getting on in years, but it's still very tough when something like this happens. My prayers to Joyce and her family, ...
