Kaylynn44	Posted - August 22 2008 : 10:15:17 AM I have been trying to trace back my family tree. i have thought of doing it for years, but finally decided to actually do it. Well, On my mother's side, I can only go back to my great grandparents and on my father's paternal side, I can only go back to my great grandparents, but on my father's maternal side, I can go way back if the web sites that I am going to are correct. I found my grandparents on e-family tree.net, and it stopped at a certain point, so my dad suggested that I go to the Mormon site. He said that they had all kinds of records. So, I did and it picked up where the other site ended. It goes way back, but I just want to make sure that I am doing this right, so if anybody does this kind of thing, can you PM me and help me out? I appreciate it!!! Love, Kay

I am a direct descendant of Jean Guenon, a Huguenot who fled to Holland and eventually to Flushing, New Netherlands (Long Island) in the mid-17th century. There. I've said it. I admit that I have a teeny, tiny, eensie, little bit of French blood flowing through my veins. But, rest assured that it is not nearly enough to entice me into going over to The Dark Side of Re-enacting the F&I War period. No way, no how!

This is a place where you can search in different forums and post queries to connect with others who are researching the same people. I have connected with a number of distant cousins who answered my posts on certain ancestors. Some of them have helped me, and I have been able to help others with information. I would also like to emphasize what Steph said: do not take anything you find online as the absolute truth without good, supporting, original documents to back it up. If you connect with people to get information, be sure they can provide copies of their sources and documents for you. Also, I have found so many errors on Ancestry.com that were posted by other people in their family trees. One of my own cousins put up some of my information that I had researched and provided... and got it wrong!!! I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but my feeling is that the Mormon religion encourages a lot of false information to be created in its zeal to "seal" all of their ancestors into the church. Go cautiously!

blackfootblood	Posted - August 22 2008 : 7:50:34 PM Here you go Kay: The best one to start with Ancestry.com. This is a subscription site, but I think there might be some free elements. Another site that is excellent, and free, is www.cyndislist.com. This site is a comprehensive site of links of all kinds in genealogy, free and subscription based. This should get your friend started. Let me know if additional sites are wanted/needed. Hope this helps!
blackfootblood	Posted - August 22 2008 : 4:33:44 PM Hey Kay! I e-mailed my mother-in-law because she is big into geneology. She knows all the sites to go to and so forth. So when I hear back from her I'll post them for you. Hope they help. Good luck with the search. It's always interesting what you find out about you're ancestors. And you might be lucky and found out something you never knew about you're tree.

Monadnock Guide	Posted - August 22 2008 : 4:21:57 PM While I'm not into it Kay, - I've worked with a guy that REALLY was into it. One thing he mentioned is that churches, especially Catholic, often had better records than many communities - fwiw.
Fitzhugh Williams	Posted - August 22 2008 : 11:11:38 AM Go to the census records. One set every 10 years. You can see who was in the household and figure things out by the age of the people. But when you get back to, I think, 1820, they didn't name the people living in a family, just numbered them, so it's not much help. Also, look for county and district histories, and family histories. The library at Greenville has a room dedicated to that sort of thing. If you get lucky, maybe somebody included the info in the "History of ??? county". I was able to find a number of family histories like that that cross-referenced my ancestor who lived not far from where I do now, just 250 years ago. Also, you might try the Genealogy Building in Edgefield. They have lots of info, and I was able to find some good stuff there on a man I was researching, one Philemon Waters. He lived in Newberry and Laurens counties, so the info they have is not just pertaining to Edgefield.
