Posted - July 22 2008 : 6:32:19 PM Yes I am still alive.
I was crushed I couldn't go to the Gathering this year but to make a long story short we had to go back up to Cleveland Clinic. My dad had developed an infection in a pacemaker lead and it was fairly extensive surgery to remove it, so we went back up there to have it done. He is now up in Cleveland at a surgical rehab facility doing really well and recovering.
I had spent the previous two months giving him daily IV antibiotics to help sideline the infection prior to the surgery. It was that nasty MRSA infection that is so virulent in hospitals.
I'm still working with the Catholic media and must be in the right place; In 20 years with corporate media I never won diddly. In June at a conference in Toronto I won third place nationally for news feature writing in our division.
as I said I was crushed I missed the Gathering and I just went away for a while because I so wanted to see everybody. I miss you guys and I miss the mountains. Thankfully a group of us are headed up to Deal's Gap for a motorcycle trip tomorrow so I will get to see a little bit of North Carolina but it won't be the same.
I am otherwise okay but I have had to have emergency dental work (root canals) in the past two weeks because...believe it or not...I fell on ice back in February. That's right. I had a bad fall on our frozen-over steps during a rare winter storm here in Columbia and jarred my bottom jaw. Unbeknownst to me, according to the endodontist, a fall like that can cause nerve damage and cause the teeth to start having root problems. Boy did I learn that the hard way. Who knew? A word to the wise. If you fall, get into a car accident, are hit, etc. and it involves your jaw, have your dentist X-ray you within a month or so to see if there is any root or nerve damage. it can save you a lot of pain later!
nothing with me is ever quite normal but that keeps life interesting, I guess. Hope you all are well!

Posted - July 23 2008 : 07:58:09 AM Geez, Christina! Sorry to hear your dad has been so sice but glad to hear he's on the mend. And what about those root canals?! Had one myself a couple of years ago and hopefully won't ever need another one.
You take care of yourself. Claude and I missed the Gathering, too, and like you, we really miss those mountains....and all the Mohicanlanders, too, of course. |

Posted - July 22 2008 : 11:12:16 PM Glad to hear that you're alive, but wow...what a life!
That MRSA infection is bad stuff. My dad had it, too, and I'm always wondering if it will come back. I hope that your Dad is fully recovered.
You were missed at the Gathering--looking at photos from people's scrapbooks made us all think of people that couldn't be there. Maybe the next Gathering...??
I hope that things get better for you soon, and congrats on the award! |
