Some of you might remember me mentioning in another thread here that my dad was having heart valve surgery at Cleveland Clinic on Jan. 10. Just wanted to let all know he came through very well. He now has two repaired valves (tricuspid and mitral) and a brand new aortic valve. The brilliant surgeon managed to do all this in under seven hours.

Dad was only in ICU for four days when initially they told us it was going to be a week. He is generally doing fine and we should be flying back to Columbia on Monday (Jan. 21.) He is still in the hospital tonight with the requisite aches and pains.

This successful surgery has more than ever reinforced my belief that PRAYER WORKS. I really believe that it was your good prayers and thoughts mixed with our other family and friends that helped this happen.
Thank you so much!

Good to be home I'm sure, - best of luck.
Christina Posted - January 31 2008 : 7:32:03 PM
WE'RE BACK!!! Got back to Charlotte, N.C. last night and then a friend drove us back to Columbia. Dad is doing pretty well and has home health care to help with some of the followup treatment.

Thank you for all your continued thoughts and prayers! I am so happy to be home. to paraphrase the late great Lewis Grizzard, "If I ever get back to South Carolina, I'm going to nail my feet to the ground."

Jokes against Cleveland weather aside, however, we really couldn't have received better treatment from the folks up there. Truly the Cleveland Clinic is one of the world class medical facilities.

Well that is welcomed news. Good luck with the trip home. Be safe!

Christina,

Hope all will be well and sounds like discharge will be mere formality.

Christina Posted - January 29 2008 : 10:31:02 PM
Well, technically he has been "medically discharged" but he is still over there because tomorrow they will allegedly sign off on all the final medical orders and etc. and then we'll just pick him up with the car service and (allegedly) head to the airport and go home.

I say allegedly because I am never completely sure about the workings of bureaucracy and also Cleveland is supposed to have weird gale force winds tonight and tomorrow.
But all things seem go for a true "discharge" from the hospital. Just keeping fingers crossed!
winglo Posted - January 29 2008 : 8:07:15 PM
So, did they discharge your dad yet, Christina?
Christina Posted - January 29 2008 : 09:53:52 AM
Update: We are still waiting to get sprung from the hospital. Dad allegedly has "discharge" orders but now we have to wait for a phalanx of doctors to sign off on them and for a case manager to arrange for the limited home health care he is going to need when he gets home. We also are waiting on confirmation he can get a special assistance flight for tomorrow (Wednesday).
Between dealing with hospital and insurance buraucracy and the airlines it's beginning to feel like we're waiting for the parole board to meet. I promise, eventually we will get out of Cleveland. I think.

Latest update -- Dad's staph infection is getting a lot better and hopefully he will be getting out of here on Tuesday. They have isolated the particular type of infection and say they should be able to treat it with a pill. Other than that dad's vitals are very good and hsi energy level is up and down but overall pretty good. He is up and walking around several times a day and talking to friends on the phone, watching TV, etc. So all things being equal we are doing very well. I've got some friends coming over from Akron to visit tomorrow so that will be good.

Definitely looking up and hopefully we will be able to see beautiful South Carolina again on Tuesday. Let me put it this way...you know you have been in Cleveland, Ohio in January too long when you look at the weather forecast and go "Cool! The high's going up to 19 tomorrow! We're having a warm spell!"

Well, small setbacks. Dad has developed a staph infection in his sternal incision but the good news is it is very treatable and not one of the life threatening ones. He is being treated with IV antibiotics so he can still walk around the halls and they are using also a special pump mechanism to keep the dressing dry and clean. With luck they are hoping to send him home with IV antibiotics or some in pill form if the infection continues to dissipate. He has no fever and little pain, no motion restrictions, etc. I know the IV antibiotic thing can be done because my cousin had to wear some for a month in the fall.
I was down for the past two days with a vicious stomach virus that has been going around Cleveland. But I'm feeling better and my boss has sent me some work to do tele-commuting wise so I'm feeling a little more sane. I go over to the hospital every few hours from the hotel (it's across the street.)
As dad says this is a "bump in the road" and trust me there are many others on the ward in worse situations than he is. Please continue to pray for us. They are telling us with luck we should be out of here over the weekend or by Monday.

Very good news, Christina. I'm so glad to hear that your Dad is doing so well.

This was a very, very serious surgery. I'm not sure everyone completely understands that. People don't always survive it. I lost a dear Aunt about 10 years ago, due to failed heart valve surgery. She never woke up. And just recently, a close friend of mine had her aortic valve replaced and an aortic aneurism repaired. She made it through the surgery, but had at least one stroke during recovery. She is now a complete invalid in a nursing home, who can do nothing for herself. Nothing.

Your Dad is very fortunate, indeed.

Christina,
That is wonderful news!!! It is always hard when someone that you love has to have surgery but with prayer, things turn out just as they should. I will pray that he continues to get better and stronger!!!

Love,
Kay

Wonderful news Christina. Happy to hear it so thanks for sharing.

Good news to hear, Christina. As you probably know, Claude had triple by-pass surgery in August...and, yes, prayer does indeed work. The miracle of modern medicine is something to behold and many are still with us today because of God-given talent and ability of those in the medical field. May God continue to place His healing hand on your dad. We'll keep you and him in our thoughts and prayers.

Glad to hear this news, Christina....it has enlightened my day.

Prayer does, indeed, work! May your Dad continue to improve, and 2008 is a very good, healthy year for him....I will be keeping him and you and all your family on my 'special' prayer list!

Very happy & good news, Red! Prayer, indeed, does work! My best to you, your Dad, and family ...
