OK, all youse guys out there who know about cars.....

HELP!!!!!!

I have a '93 Dodge Intrepid with 150,000 miles on it. Automatic tranny. This morning (which was a very cold morning!), I took my son to work driving 30 miles per hour all the way (4 miles one way) because the tranny would not shift out of low gear. I never took the tach over 3000 revs, once I discovered it wasn't shifting up. It will shift into reverse. I think the tranny fluid level is OK, unless I suddenly developed a huge leak.

My question is: I know that this could ultimately be the clutch gone bad, but is there anything else... more simple and less costly... that it could be? Could it have frozen due to the cold weather? Is there some sort of sensor that could have gone kapput? Any other possibilities?

I will be taking it in as soon as I can, of course, but was just hoping for a little reassurance.

WW, who is feeling more than just a little battered this weekend.

When it's really cold, shifting in my car (auto transmission also) feels like moving through molasses, so maybe the cold is the problem. And that's all I know (or can guess) about that.

No clutch, huh? Well, you can probably tell that I have driven a standard transmission nearly all of my life. Yes, every once in a while my left foot still pounds the floorboard.

Oddly, when I went out later today to go pick up my son, it shifted just fine. No problem whatsoever. The fluid level is fine. I'll have to check the service receipts, but I think my husband may have had the transmission flushed a couple of years ago. He was always very good about taking care of our cars. I miss that a great deal and don't like having to be the one to handle it.

Thanks for your help and suggestions, as well as for your kind words. You too, Lady Kay. I appreciate it very much.

For starters WW, - that car is hardly broken in yet. Automatics btw, - don't have clutches. It's possible the tran oil is thick, - but there's probably something else going on. Let the car run for at least 8-10 minutes - idling is fine. Then shut it off, and check the transmission oil. If you're not sure how, - have you son do the same thing later. ... BTW, you didn't cause any problems with Isle or anyone else, - and Rich took the right action. Some folks get a tad emotional, - far over the norm. ... best of luck. BTW, - if the trans oil is ok, - and the problem continues, yes - get it to a garage asap. Don't want you walking to any gatherings! ... ;) (Also, if everything checks out ok, - you might consider having the tranny "flushed" ... new oil and filter. With those miles it's overdue)
