For those who know us...

Karen & I lost our mom yesterday. Her battle with ovarian cancer ended after 1 1/2 years of treatment. We took her home from the hospital on September 10th when it was apparent she would not recover from abdominal surgery done on Aug 31st. We spent 2 weeks living with her in her home (she was SOOO happy to go home) doing hospice care. It has been quite a journey - many emotional ups and downs. But we're happy we could help our mother end her days peacefully and in her own home. She slipped away quietly with each of us holding a hand.

Ovarian cancer is a horrible disease. We hope that someday it will receive as much attention and research as breast cancer.

We owe many thanks to our husbands for their patience and understanding while we "deserted" them to spend these last days with our mom. We love them!

Jayne, Karen...

Like Jo, I haven't been around Mohicanland for a spell ('stuff' going on here) and consequently, hadn't read your post.

I am so dreadfully sorry to hear of the loss of your Mum!! I know how much you gals loved that very special lady!! But I ALSO KNOW how good you girls were in looking after her and helping her in any way you could, through her distressing condition. And how lovely that you were able to hold her hand and help her prepare for the next stage of her journey.

The sad fact is, my dears, that we lose our parents. Sooner or later it happens. The main thing is that we spend time with them, help them, LOVE THEM while they are with us. You ladies did that. And the three of you were sooo close. THOSE are the memories you now have, those are memories that you will keep with you, those are the memories that will, in time, make you smile fondly and say to each other 'remember when...?'

As you try and get to the point where it doesn't hurt so much, remember that your friends are thinking of you and praying for you.
Love,
Kate.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and I'm really sorry to hear about our loss. She must have been quite a lady to have raised two such special daughters, and I truly mean that as a compliment to her.

Having lost a friend to ovarian cancer in May I feel your loss and agree that ovarian cancer is a monster...harder to detect than breast cancer and when it it discovered it is sometime too late! I cannot imagine what it is like to lose your mother! My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you! I am so sorry for your loss!

My friend battled and beat (we thought)ovarian cancer five years ago. All test were negative up until her five year anniversary and it was back and had already metasticised to her brain. She chose not to seek treatment and to enjoy her time left. She was given three to six months but she hung on for a year.

Dear Jayne, and Karen too...

Reading your message has brought tears to my eyes and very painful recent memories to the forefront. Having just gone through (and still going through) dealing with a cancer illness and the loss of someone because of it, I know all too well what you are going through.

I know, too, that as difficult as it is to go through, being there with that someone and holding their hand when they take that last breath and pass over is a wonderful "gift." I know that, in time, you will be very grateful that you and Karen were able to do that for your dear Mother.

I am praying for comfort and for strength for the two of you and for your families as you make funeral and burial arrangements and progress into your final grieving process. God Bless you both.

Dear Karen and Jayne,
I am so sorry to hear that your mom passed away, but she will always be in your heart and memories. I know that it had to be such a comfort for her to be in her own home with her daughters at her side.
Please know that y'all are in my thoughts and prayers!!! I love y'all!!!

My heart goes out to you. I lost my Mom almost 2 years ago, and I still miss her so much. I am glad you were able to be with yours at the end. I'm sure it meant a lot to her, but also must have meant a great deal to you both, too.

Dear Karen and Jayne,
I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of your Mother. I know how
painfull that is. My Mom had lung cancer that spread to her brain.
It's good to know you were able to be there with her and share her
passing.
My prayers are with all of you tonight.

With My Deepest Sympathy,
Donna

I'm so sorry to hear you girls have lost your Mom. I know your Mom found great comfort in her two wonderful daughters by her side whenever needed! You are right Jayne, ovarian cancer is a merciless, evasive disease and much work has been done, but certainly much more needs to be done. You and Karen will be in my thoughts in the coming days and I wish I could be there to give you big hug!!!

A friend shared this Native American prayer the other day with another friend who lost her Mom after a long battle too. I thought it was very beautiful...

I give you this one thought to keep-
I am with you still- I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone-
I am with you still- in each new dawn.

Much love to you Jayne and Karen!

To face that cancer for 1 1/2 years, your mother must have been a brave woman. I'll keep you both in my prayers. God bless.
