So, did anyone else have to cancel their plans for Labor Day weekend due to the rising gas prices? I heard that it was up to $6 a gallon in Georgia?

Emily, - meant to add - that's $30,000.00 A DAY increase in lease rates. All these rigs are going to Saudi Arabia on a three year lease, - with an built-in option on two additional years.

Emily, - the quick & easy answer is YES! Our energy usage is like a checking account that constantly has a one dollar balance. For every $50.00 put in, - $50.00 is withdrawn. We're really walking an energy tightrope today, and a any mis-step is a serious cause for alarm. On top of that, starting this October, five oil rigs are moving out of the gulf to Saudi Arabia, - at approx. $30,000.00 higher lease rates. It's likely several more will follow, - money does talk after all. We need desperately to drill in "politically difficult" areas, and build several new refineries. Tapping our oil reserves is worth about 6 days of usage, and what do we do after that?

Gas prices should drop "somewhat" in the future, after the refineries are back up and running. However, - they're never going back where folks are used to seeing them. The energy world has changed far too much for that. We're now in competition, very heavily - with both China & India for spot oil on the open market. In the not too distant past, this wasn't much of a problem. Today, with their "huge & expanding" economies, their appetite for energy is causing some very serious competition, - for all concerned worlwide. On top of that, because of the enviro's, we haven't built any new rtefineries. Our "newest one" is about thirty years old. Eventually they'll get to the point where maintance is a serious problem - and we'll have shortages all the time. We desperately need to build new refineries, - as in several, and away from the gulf area.

Emily,
I couldn't find the little article where I saw that somewhere in Ga. that gas had climbed as high as $6.00, but I did read it somewhere. Here is a little snippet about the gas around Atlanta,Ga.

Atlanta is already being affected with long lines and some prices climbing to over $5.00 per gallon. In response, Governor Sonny Perdue announced that the state of Georgia will be waiving gasoline regulations to help stave off the escalation and potential supply issues associated with Katrina.

Caitlin,
I am sure that prices will start dropping soon, at least I hope so. If it is like this next year, I may not be able to attend the 2006 Gathering. My hubby has already said that our vacation time might be cut short next year, but I told him that I would give up my other vacations as long as I get to attend the Gathering.

Love,
Kay

I have been watching the news reports on the Gulf Coast. My heart and prayers go out to those people. But watching all of those people looting disturbs me a great deal. I know some of them have to eat and need the food, soap, diapers, and things like that, and I don't have a problem with those people taking that. It's not doing the retailers any good anyway. But those people looting TVs, computers, and other crap like that really disgusts me.

$6 a gallon?! I thought I heard $5 in Georgia. Gas prices here in Western KY are $2.98 and rising and that's the lowest I seen around here, or anywhere for that matter. They are saying once we've used all of what our gas stations have stocked, there won't be any more for a while. Can closing those few oil rigs really cause that much trouble for this long?!!!
Sorry, but I feel better now.

Kay,
I totally agree, compared to those suffering in the Gulf Coast, I don't have much to complain about. I pray for those poor people every day.

It is a lifestyle change. I consolidate my trips because we live about 20 minutes from town and I still have to take my daughter to school. As far as shopping, I have spent a lot more than usual stocking up so I'm not running to the store 3 times a week. Going to the zoo, museums etc. are on hold for now and that is difficult because the kids go batty staying at home and are only able to play outside occasionally in this 108 degree weather.

I sure hope things get under control soon - if ever....
Caitlin

Hi Caitlin,
We don't go anywhere that we don't have to go. We had thought about maybe going to Tybee Island for Labor Day, but decided it would be best to just stay home.
I heard that gas was up to five and six dollars a gallon somewhere around Atlanta, Ga. It's $3.29 for us right now. As much as I hate the gas prices, we are all so lucky to just have gas prices to worry about. It could be alot worse!!!
Oh well, we probably need to stay home more anyway. Right?

Love,
Kay
