. . .to the Harrisburg area!!! Yes indeed, I just received the Susquehanna Folk Music Society's schedule of upcoming concerts for 2005-06, and Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas (a cellist with whom he's currently performing) will be here on February 25 -- a long way off, but a very nice birthday present for me! As many of you know, Alasdair is a wonderful Scottish fiddler (currently residing in the U.S., I believe) who performed "The Gael" on the LOTM soundtrack, and who has done a number of CDs of Scottish fiddle music (I would particularly recommend "The Road North" and "Skyedance"). Maybe this advance notice will give some other Mohicanites time to make plans to attend -- wonder what Alasdair would think if Serjeant MacWilliam showed up, appropriately enough, in uniform?!

Make that "Alasdair Fraser came, and played, and got a standing ovation." The music was wonderful, and it was interesting to learn that in the 18th century the Scottish "dance band" would have consisted of a fiddle, a piper, and a cello, which served as the rhythm section. Alasdair is a very entertaining performer, and one instance of that is a story he told about having been invited, years ago, to Charlton Heston's home for a Burns Night celebration, when Scotsmen pay homage to Robert Burns and his poetry and all things Scottish. The highlight is the ceremonial presentation of a haggis, accompanied by a vigorous recital of Burns' ode to the haggis, a duty that Heston undertook to perform himself while brandishing a dirk. Alasdair was standing in the back of the room thinking that it was all rather weird, when a piper standing nearby leaned over and said, "Hey, Alasdair, it's no' every day you get to see Moses doin' the haggis!"

The Harrisburg Academy, Erford Road, Wormleysburg, at 7:30 p.m. I hope the soldiers of the 77th will be able to come! Here's the website: http://www.sfmsfolk.org

Of course I'm not mad at you, Diana, I'm happy for you -- everyone should see and hear Alasdair Fraser as often as they can! And I have another SFMS concert to look forward to in September -- Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. Jay wrote, and they perform, "Ashokan Farewell," that lovely, haunting theme from Ken Burns' Civil War series. I don't know the rest of their music, but just hearing that one piece will be worth the price of admission.

Oh Mary - I suppose you'll be mad at me when I tell you... I GET TO SEE ALASDAIR at the New Hampshire Highland Games in late September of THIS year!
