Well..my computer has crashed, taking ALL my stuff with it, with a few exceptions. My address book is one casualty! I would appreciate it if anyone with whom I have had email correspondence would send me one so I can reply and get your addresses back. You will have my email address in your books.

Sorry for the inconveniences, and I really appreciate the assistance!

Hey, Guys,

Thanks for the words of support.

For those of you out there who have been fortunate enough - up until THIS point - to avoid any such calamity with YOUR personal computer, you can learn a valuable lesson from those of us that have "been there" - said "to hell with daily backups!" - and "lost that"!

Complacancy is your enemy! DO NOT ASSUME for ONE MINUTE that this seemingly harmless electronic device - on which you send and receive your most precious emails, and store your valued documents and photos - is incapable of blowing up in your face when you least expect it!!!

I myself went along blissfully from day to day, knowing - as Kate said - that I should be routinely performing backups of those things which I held most dear, but not following through. You see, up until a few weeks before I experienced my "crash," I had been protected by Norton SystemWorks 2002 - one of the most wonderful software products I have ever had the pleasure of using. It included a WONDERFUL feature called "Go-Back" and anytime I began to experience problems with my computer - such as having it "hang" or "freeze" on me, or constantly having to do the Ctrl+Alt+Delete thing to restart it - this "Go-Back" feature enabled me to choose from several different dates or "safe points" from which to re-start my computer. These were always recent dates when my computer had started and run with no problems. Of course, anything I had received since the date of my chosen "safe point" had to first be saved ...but once I restarted the computer from that point, it was back to running like it should.

Unfortunately, Symantec recently stopped supporting this version of SystemWorks & I purchased & installed their Internet Security package only weeks prior to my "crash." During the installation of the new software, I was instructed to remove all of the files & folders associated with my beloved SystemWorks & I had a bad feeling in my stomach the whole time I was deleting those files...

Now, dont get me wrong - the Internet Security thing is ALSO a wonderful program - but I know down in my soul that if I still had an active version of SystemWorks in place - including "Go-Back" - I stood a good chance of avoiding my "crash" by calling, once again, on that "Go-Back" feature.

In case you haven't picked up on where I'm going with this: buy Norton SystemWorks & USE IT. I know I'M going to be purchasing their most current release - and SOON!

Darn it!! WHAT A THING TO HAPPEN!!!!! I'm so sorry to hear that you (And you too, Diane!!) have lost some very valuable files! Since giving up our photo albums and Shoeboxes in favour of our computers, we have come to believe that our little technologically advanced (???) boxes of metal in the corner of our room will hold copies of our dearest possessions for all time! We forget it only takes a hard drive to suddenly go on the fritz - or a power surge or... an escaped hamster chewing a vital wire (yep! I know someone that had that happen to them!) to lose our precious pics...

Unfortunately, I can say that *I* too have 'been there' - a FEW times, actually!!! And do *I* now 'back up'???? Uh uh... What a numpty, eh????? I did START to 'back Up' as I went but then I got complacent! And I can guarantee that over 50% of my stuff is sitting in this here contraption, in their little files and folders, with no 'back-up' file... just WAITING to disappear into the ether...

*the JAWS music plays here!* THE DAY IS COMING...

SO - I'm going to learn from YOUR mistake, Seamus... and I'm going off to find a blank CD or two or... three...

Again - sorry to hear you guys lost precious pics.

Hi RW---------

I agree with everything you said.........I, too, failed to to what I should have done, and WILL be doing now. AND, I lost some very important sentimental family stuff, too..............

Fortunately, I do have my Regimental stuff on a thumb drive, and therefore, it was safe. Man! If I had lost that.......!!!! God does smile sometimes on dumb animals like me.

Hey, I'll trade butt-kicks with ya!

Geez, I just HATE when that happens!!!

Seamus, I share your pain because early in April, I went through the same experience with my computer. I was forced to reformat my hard drive & I also lost my address book, as well as lots of documents and all of my emails - including all of the emails from my baby sister, who passed away three years ago.

I work with computers every day & I know that one of the first rules with computers is: back up your files, your emails & anything else that you don't want to lose. However, I never bothered to do that with my home computer because it had never given me any trouble. BIG MISTAKE! I knew I should be doing back-ups & if I had done that, I wouldn't have lost all of the things I lost. Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty stupid right now...and I'm still kicking myself for not taking the time to run back-ups!
