I was attending a class at the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ on Friday and Saturday and who should I run into amidst the GoreTex and Graphite but Ken Reinard, a member of the German Regiment whose civilian persona is an angler of 1770. His broadside:

OF INTEREST TO SPORTING GENTLEMEN

Edwd. Pole, whofe establifhment may be found in the Market
Street, near the Court Houfe in Philadelphia wifhes to remind the
Publick that he enjoys the Reputation of a Purveyor & Stockist of
only the Finest Goods and Accouterments to fuit the Gentleman
Angler, offering befpoke goods as well as trade items from
Selected Vendors of London. Mr. Pole alfo hoped to inform the
Publick that he is in affociation with Phineas Reinhardt, Efq.,
noted Angle Fifherman, Author & Tacklemaker, whofe Angle Rods,
Artificial Flies, & hand forged Hooks, have attracted Favorable
Notice from the most Difcriminating Clientele of this Colony as
well as Virginia and the Carolinas.

Nothing piques the interest of fishermen like a 20' cane pole! Ken tyes the flies by holding the hook in one hand and wrapping with the other. When asked where his vice is, he points to a bag of coins and deck of cards. (Bad inside fisherman joke, probably uninteligable to normal people. Modern folk when fly tying use a metal device to hold the hook called a vice.)

If you get a chance to see Ken's slide presentation, it is well worth it. Apparently the German Regiment does Williamsburg's Publick Times events on occasion. I am thinking of adding some angling to my Ranger personna and his book "The Colonial Angler's Manual of Flyfishing and Flytying" has good information on period rod construction and photographs that cleared up Charles Cotton's written fly pattern receipts in "The Complete Angler".

I sent along to the Gathering a used copy of "Ye Olde Colonial Angler" that I found at an antique hunting and fishing show last fall. Since I bought it without knowing anything about the author, I'm very glad to hear that he is well thought of, and I hope whoever ended up with the book (don't know whether it went to the raffle or the auction) has enjoyed it.

Kurt, I know Ken well, and there isn't a better person to introduce you to this part of our game. I've seen him in action many times and he never ceases to amaze me!

Go for it!
