ARGH!!! Right now I think Claude and I are ready....ask me again tomorrow! Looks like we could get some pretty fierce winds by tomorrow afternoon/evening. I'll try to keep everybody informed as allowed. Our hatches have been battened down....how 'bout yours Del? |

He's baaa--aaack! Looks as though ol' Ivan didn't get enough of us here in Dixie...a piece of him spun off, made its way back across Florida as a tropical storm at 60 mph winds and is in the Gulf headed for Louisiana and Texas...Geez! And now Jeanne has her eye (no pun intended) on the east coast of Florida, around the same area that Frances visited. Geez...stinkin' Louise! |

Glad to be able to see that everybody in Mohicanland affected by this so far is all right and maintaining a sense of humour about the whole thing...
Update on the Florida cousins...after two days of e-mail and phone attempts and contacting other family members, we finally learned their whereabouts yesterday (and somehow re-ignited a long-running family feud in the meantime, but oh well...it's between two other cousins, not us!!!  ) Christine and Tom are in a hotel in Evergreen, Alabama,that apparently had excellent facilities to accomodate folks with disabilities...Their home in Pensacola lost its entire front -- porch, supports, etc. but miraculously not the roof. Their kids either have four feet of water in their homes or massive amounts of trees down. None of the family is able to get back to the parts of Gulf Breeze and other towns hear Pensacola where they live because of flooding, blocked roads, washed out highways. We have no idea how their businesses fared but things aren't looking that great...Word is C. and T. will be out of their house for at least four months so they're looking for alternate housing, and meanwhile everybody is just hoping to be able to get back to survey the damage soon...The MOST important thing, however, is that everybody is safe and alive...thanks all for your questions and prayers...
Meanwhile, Ivan did a horrible number on parts of Western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, where the bulk of our extended family and many, many friends live. Check out this awful story of the little town of Carnegie -- I believe the church mentioned here is where another cousin was married a few years back. Say a prayer for these folks as well!

Glad to see all of you southerners checking in, and glad that all is well with all of you... if a tad damp!
Seamus, I had a similar cabin experience Friday night, as I was staying at Newtown again. (The park hosted a high school Invitational X-Country Running Event on Saturday morning.) Ruth, our CVLHC Volunteer Coordinator, and I stayed there so we each wouldn't have to drive for an hour at 5:00 am.
It seems as though I slept very little, as I laid there all night listening to the powerful sound of the wind and the rain drumming on the roof and windows of the cabin. All of this was punctuated frequently by the sound of acorns falling from the oak trees overhead and hitting the roof. 'Twas a noisy night, indeed! No evening campfire for us, either!
Fortunately, the rain stopped early Saturday morning. However, the trails were a muddy, soupy mess and you should have seen those kids when they had completed their races! They were solid brown all the way up the backs of their legs and rears!
The Susquehanna, Chenango, and Chemung Rivers ( and others) have again overflowed their banks... muddy, churning waters filling fields and closing roads. Still... for us it is nothing compared to what North Carolina, Florida, and Alabama have suffered. |

Still no power here where I live in Haywood County (west of Asheville)... I'm on someone else's computer right now. Not sure when power will be restored; my road washed away last week so I don't know how the power trucks will come in to repair the lines. There are trees down on the lines and some lines laying on the ground, so it's a mess!!! Since Frances I've had to park a good distance from my house in a church parking lot. Well, now that parking lot, the church and the parsonage all flooded! What a mess, but it could have been worse. I can stand a little inconvenience as long as everyone is safe. It's starting to look like the only way to get to my house is by helicopter!! But I also like to say that my "castle" is just surrounded by a moat.... yeah right!

On Ivan's way through here, he spawned 24 tornado's. Worse outbreak ever in these parts. There were about 5 within 15 miles of us, but the closest was about 3. So all is well here.

O'l Ivan's remains paid us a visit here in the Central Susquehanna Valley Friday and yesterday with HEAVY rains and some wind. The river is to crest by noon with the 4th highest recorded level, all of which I have experienced...a rather dubious distinction!!
We are high enough not to have any problems, but my daughter and her family had a sump pump fail and awoke yeseterday to find 1 1/2 feet of water (clean, thank God!) in their beautifully finished basement. Their loss is in furniture and some minor stuff which probably should have been thown out anyway. The carpets are out drying and heat and dehumidifiers are at work drying out the rest. Hundreds of photographs which were stored in baskets and boxes on the floor of her craft room (she is a scrapbooker) are now drying all over our house. I think most have been saved. Many of her neighbors and friends showed up to help them move things out and clean up. The 3 1/2 year old granddaughter thought it was great fun, because the upstairs looked like a Day Care Center with all the kiddies who came with their parents!
I had a Field Day weekend scheduled at my cabin and had been there since early Friday, along with Scouts Reeder and Clark, who had arrived later in the day. It was drizzling when I arrived and became a torrential downpour which continued until shortly after daybreak. One could have canoed throuh the woods in some places! I was unaware of the kids' plight until about noon Saturday, when I....ahem....turned on my cell phone to look for a couple guys who had not yet arrived at the cabin. I found a few messages waiting which told me what had gone on, so we...Scout Reeder, Scout Clark and I....packed up, closed the cabin and headed home. As I travelled home, I began to see the effects of the rains in angry, debris-filled swollen creeks and flooded lowlands. It took a bit of creativity to get here due to closed roads and detours! While Reeder is quite far above any streams, he had about a foot of ground water in his basement, but no damage of consequence. He has made contingencies since he did suffer some significant problems before. Clark phoned his wife and was told that the TWO creeks near them were advancing on their new home, replacing one they lost in a fire 2 years ago. I have not heard from him since we left, and only hope and pray that they are OK.
Bookworm, tell David that the little log cabin weathered the storm without a single leak. It was an amazing experience to take a drubbing like that in there. The sound was awesome! And the new A-frame arbor over the outdoor bake oven worked to perfection. Except for underneath the cabin, beneath it was the only dry spot to be found.
Today we will continue doing what we can at Jenny's house and wait for the water to go down so we can help Drummer Bolich at his house, which has taken significant river water. Human casualties attributed to Ivan here, so far reported--one man across the river from here who suffered a fatal heart attack while moving furniture out of harm's way.
Our prayers go to those who lost MUCH more than us here--property damage and, especially, human life. |

Lost power here in Candler, just west of Asheville, for about 18 hours, plus a few sporadic losses here & there. Marion home is fine!
Many roads were closed, there was flooding, etc., but, all in all, this storm could have been much worse! |

I became interested in the French aspect of Colonial history some years ago, but not many others in SC are. Fort Toulouse is the only "French" site within any range of where I live, so I go there every chance I get. You really have to see it to appreciate it. Right Theresa? I would love to visit Louisbourg, Quebec, etc., but they are quite a distance away. Some of the structures at Fort Toulouse are not very "hurricane proof", so I hope they fared better than those in the news reports I have read. I have a lot of limbs down in my yard and I was supposed to be out of the path of he storm.
Last weekend at Fort Loudoun I was a French milice, but when I go to Fort Toulouse I will probably be English. Funny how that works! |

I've been reading about Ivan's visit to Mohicanland -- http://www.citizen-times.com -- and it ain't pretty. Sounds like some of our friends might be having it rough at the moment, with, at the least, no electricity and thus no way to post here and let us know they're OK. You're in our thoughts and prayers, guys, so let us know you're safe just as soon as you can.
South-central PA experienced what was left of Ivan last night, in the form of high winds, heavy rains, and at least two confirmed tornadoes in Franklin County, southwest of Carlisle. My husband heard the tornado warnings around 8:00 last night and headed off to do his duty at the emergency operations center. He returned several hours later, reporting a few buildings wrecked but nothing like the devastation farther south. And now it's a beautiful early fall day, as if nothing ever happened. |

Thankfully we only lost power for a few hours. However my mom and dad and sister, brother in law and nieces and nephew, who live on Mobile Bay, are looking at a long clean-up. Thankfully, neither had damage to their homes, but so many trees were down that each literally had to chainsaw their way down the street to their homes. My sister lost her pier. Their neighborhoods look like war zones. It could be three weeks before they get power back. The National Guard is giving out one bag of ice per family member, which is such a blessing because no one can get ice anywhere. My sis jokingly said she's iced down a case of beer and can now face the clean up without losing her mind.  LOL |

Whew! Everything is fine here...yesterday was pretty rough with winds clocked at around 60 mph and luckily...and surprisingly...there were no tornado spin-offs. All we have are a few small limbs in the yard but we drove around town yesterday evening and there were several large trees uprooted and small structural damage, but not much. The Gulf Shores/Orange Beach/Perdido Beach area was hit right smack dab in the face...HARD! Christina, looks like Pensacola might have been hit pretty hard as well...hope your cousin is ok. Now, my North Carolina buds...you all stay safe...looks like some pretty nasty weather in your area now. |

I'd be ever so grateful if my fellow Mohicanlanders could send up some thoughts and prayers for my cousin and her husband who live in Pensacola. She is deaf and communicates through a TTY phone: we have tried to get in touch with them for the past three days but couldn't, and are assuming they have evacuated. Her husband has a disability as well so I'm hoping they are in a good shelter or maybe went inland to their children's homes (we unfortunately don't have those numbers...) so please send up some vibes for Christine and Tom Watson, that their home and business came through fand most of all that THEY are safe...
Godspeed to everybody in the path of this latest mess!

Well as much as we have all used LOTM quotes for all kinds of various situations, I must say that's the first I've heard of one of the quotes being used as advice for a hurricane. Very clever!

I have been on the phone several times with relatives in the Fl. panhandle. The town where they live got a pretty rough hit; several trailer parks destroyed, an industrial park destroyed, and the federal prison damaged. However, I just heard that they already have power restored in their area so that is definitely great news.
So hang in there, and stay safe! There is a light at the end of the funnel....er, I mean tunnel.
