All this bad weather going on , and over here if there are leaves on the train line - all the trains get cancelled! I guess sometimes you don't know how good you have things!

As I sit here in Indiana (which, by the way, barely had any effects from any hurricane this year - come on up, Ann & Bill!), I realize I need to get on the phone to see if my niece in Orlando is ok... AND if my pal Jo from Asheville survived the flood!

I'm certainly no hurricane expert, but the naming question made me curious, too. According to the National Hurricane Center website...
"The letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z are not included because of the scarcity of names beginning with those letters. Names associated with storms that have caused significant death and/or damage are usually retired from the list". That doesn't answer the question about names starting with W, but I think Lady Ann took care of that quite nicely!

story has a very dave barry feel to it,enit?
by the time frances reached vermont, just heavy rain... west river looks like hot chocalate, the rock dam at the swiming hole built over the summer is history, 4wd got a good test last night on putney moutain road... wont be long before the snowblower gets used... arrgggh...
vincent Posted - September 10 2004 : 4:19:02 PM
Yes, if all else fails, Lady Ann still has her sense of humor and of course Bill! Thanks for the helpful insights. Seriously, why do they stop naming the hurricanes after 'W'?

On Wednesday, we felt some of the after effects of Frances all the way in New York. The rain had flooded the subway tunnels to the point of reaching the third rail at which point they decided to shut down the trains. Those unfortunate few had to wade through the "deep" water in the hot & humid tunnels to go to work.

Stay safe and dry!

Well Lady Ann, thanks for your usual humorous outlook! You really gave me a good laugh!
And now, a smoke signal from Spirits on the River:
I dropped by and spoke with Flip and was amazed at how GREAT the place looked! Totally intact, which is amazing considering the pictures of the U-haul place just down the road. Flip said there had been about an inch of mud covering everything, and a couple of prints are ruined, but clean-up was in progress and looked to be almost done. Believe it or not, he hopes to re-open TONIGHT for business and has had a lot of calls from concerned patrons. He appreciates the Mohican group's concern as well.
But before I could ask him about his flood woes, the first thing he asked me was about our Florida Mohican friends, in particular Lady Ann. I replied that she was last seen heading northwest with a tractor-trailer full of Whitmans' chocolates. Go figure! Seriously Ann, he sends his regards and hopes to call you soon.

Here is the latest Seminole County hurricane bulletin:

Here comes IVAN..."

We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season. Any day now,
you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to
some radar blob out in the Gulf of Mexico and
making two basic meteorological points:
(1) There is no need to panic.
(2) We could all be killed.
.
Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida. If you're
new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to
prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one.''
Based on our experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-
step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1. Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at
least three days.
STEP 2. Put these supplies into your car. STEP 3. Drive to Nebraska
and remain there until Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, statistics show that
most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will
foolishly stay here in Florida. We'll start with one of the most
important hurricane preparedness items:
.
HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE: If you own a home, you must have hurricane
insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as
long as your home meets two basic requirements:
(1) It is reasonably well-built, and
(2) It is located in Nebraska.
.
Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area
that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies
would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they
might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they
got into the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to
scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an
annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house.

At any moment this company can drop you like used dental floss. Since
Hurricane George, I have had an estimated 27 different home-insurance
companies. This week, I'm covered by the Bob and Big Stan Insurance
Company and Sheet Metal Shop, under a policy which states that, in addition to my premium,
Bob and Big Stan are entitled, on demand, to my kidneys.
.
SHUTTERS: Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the
windows, all the doors, and -- if it's a major hurricane -- all the
toilets.
There are several types of shutters, with advantages and
disadvantages:
Plywood shutters: The advantage is that, because you make them
yourself, they're cheap. The disadvantage is that, because you make them
yourself, they will fall off.
Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these
work well, once you get them all up. The disadvantage is that once you
get them all up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps, and it
will be December.
Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very
easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage
is that you will have to sell your house to pay for them.
.
"Hurricane-proof'' windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane
protection: They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand
hurricane winds. You can be sure of this, because the salesman says
so. He lives in Nebraska.

"Hurricane Proofing Your Property: As the
hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like
barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc.. You
should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you
don't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately).
Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly
missiles.
.
EVACUATION ROUTE: If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an
evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a
low-lying area, look at your driver's license; if it says
``Florida", you live in a low-lying area.) The purpose of having an
evacuation
route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm hits.

And you do it so well - I would have a first and last stage of unrelenting rage followed by a short burst of madness which would mean being locked away from society for my own good!

Take care Lady Ann!

The reason the National Hurricane Center stops naming the storms at "W" is because by then the State of Florida will have disappeared into the Atlantic and the storms will have to go to Mexico or the east coast of Africa instead, and English names will be superfluous.

They retire storm names based on how many headlines they have generated. The printing dies wear out.

I have finally passed into the second stage of coping with multiple hurricanes in less than a month: The first stage is maniacal laughter; the second is cynicism.
Wilderness Woman Posted - September 09 2004 : 8:35:22 PM
Jim, I'm going to remind you of your words in about 4 months when you start whining about the cold and snow again.

Ann, you piqued my curiosity and I looked up the official schedule of hurricane names. I find it interesting that the names stop at "W." I wonder why? For typhoons, which are the Pacific version of hurricanes, they continue all the way to "Z."

Another item of interest... in 2006, Hurricane Joyce will come along... hopefully she won't be too nasty. Also, they repeat the list every few years. For example, the 2004 names will be reused in 2010, except for any that get retired. I'm not certain what the criteria is for retiring a hurricane name... perhaps its intensity or damage amount?

WW: 1. Iceland is looking really good to me right now. Actually, most of our County is considering emigrating there. 2. I am a diabetic, so I will be dead from the chocolate intake long before the size of my thighs impedes my exit from the closet. (Not to worry now, I am careful, despite my chocolate addiction, and besides, I wouldn't want to miss Hurricanes Jeanne, karl, Leslie, Matthew, Nicole and Otto, who are sure to be here in the next few weeks.)

And still, you stay as you lay! I would be piling as many of my worldly belongings as I could manage and all of my animals into the car and heading for Wyoming about now.

You are one brave lady, Lady Ann.

Word of wisdom: watch your chocolate intake, or you won't be able to extract yourself from your closet by the time these hurricanes finally do stop.

Just talked to Vicki at the Geneva in Chimney Rock and they have just eeked by with no damage. She was worried about the Tiki Bar, as were WE, being that it is situated closest to the river. The town of Lake Lure lowered the lake by two feet prior to the rains in anticipation of flooding. Even so, the waters were plunging over the dam, but enough to avert extensive damage. Vicki said she prayed all Tuesday night to be spared and prayed all Wednesday night thanking God they were.

WEll, my thoughts and prayers are with you all in Florida!! and the states north of that as well; unfortunately, out here in California, we ONLY hear about Florida; not any other rain swamped states as the hurricanes move onto land...
Marcia is ok; just heard from her; for all of you that know her...
Stay well the rest of you; can't imagine Ashville a diaster area!!! Is Lowe's in that commerical lot of stores near SOTR? Seems my sisters and I took a long walk around the parking lot; we got to SOTR early that day as we didn't get lost (or we got lucky!)...wow, at least earthquakes won't usually let you know there're rumbling through....
Again, stay well!

Steph and Rich, I saw photos on the Raleigh news of the Swannanoa River and the Lowes that it flooded. Seems there was a guy trapped inside that was later rescued by raft. Is that Lowes not near SOTR? Flip and the gang were the first ones I thought of when I read about that. You guys stay away from driving through that water even if it seems shallow - I saw several small cars swamped right after Charley, thinking it couldn't be that deep. When we flooded after Dennis/Dennis/Floyd it tok several days for the flood waters to crest, so it may be bad a few more days. Of course my flat lands don't act exactly like your hilly lands when it come to water runoff. If you guys hear about Chimney Rock ro SOTR please let us know!

Ivan flattened Grenada yesterday. 90% of the homes on the island were totally destroyed. Today our local newspaper prominently featured a picture section on the destruction in Grenada...followed by the latest map of Ivan's projected path, putting him directly on my doorstep about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Great. 160+mph sustained winds. I'm getting the 5lb. box of chocolates this time.
Jacy Posted - September 09 2004 : 03:31:07 AM
Well guys I believe that Ivan went to Grenada is this right are you all safe and well?

After reading all your posts I won't be complaining about the weather we have here again! You're all saints!

Take care,

My in-laws are vacationing in the Asheville area this week. Last word from them was that they are looking for a carpenter who works in cubits, by the name of Noah...

Try to stay dry...
Stephanie Posted - September 08 2004 : 10:15:30 PM
Yes Rich Mohicanland is a mess. I've heard the Chimney Rock area got hit again pretty bad but I haven't seen any photos. Luckily my house is not flooded, so I consider myself very lucky. However, the road and bridge which connect me to the main road are GONE... just washed away! So I'm stuck until the bridge gets fixed. The little stream that washed it away has always remained several feet below the bridge, so I have never had any fear of that stream overflowing. The amount of water is just incredible. At least the power came back on, thankfully!
I fear for our friends at Spirits on the River. The pictures of Swannanoa River Rd are not very encouraging. If you get a chance, go to www.citizen-times.com and check out the reader-submitted photos.
And, pass the choclate, please!

...and now, the lovely Frances is hitting us in southern New York! It has been raining heavily for about 5 or 6 hours now. We have flood warnings in place. And it is supposed to continue into Friday, I believe.

I would have thought she would be all rained out by now.
richfed Posted - September 08 2004 : 7:07:07 PM
And, let's not forget Western North Carolina - the wind didn't amount to much, but the RAIN!!! Asheville has been declared a disaster area ... and it is! The Swannanoa River [the one that runs by Spirits on the River & generated the "falls" inside of the "cave"] and the French Broad River have bpth flooded badly [not to mention numerous smaller creeks & streams!]. Gasoline got mixed in the water & the City of Asheville had to shut off the water supply. Lots of flooded - and closed - roads. I-40 on the Buncombe/McDowell county line was closed this AM due to a mud slide. Darn! I couldn't get to work! I think one lane is open now, so I shall try anew in the morn.

Overall, quite a mess here in Mohicanland! Pass the chocolates, please!
Lady Ann Posted - September 08 2004 : 2:40:36 PM
My sunny disposition during times of adversity...like hurricanes... may be the result of the MacLeod putting, at the top of our supply list, a big fat 'ol box of Whitman's chocolates. I normally do not indulge in my chocolate addiction...but during hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados and other natural disasters I allow myself unlimited access to the Whitman's box. It is cheaper and safer than Prozac, and in my opinion, much more effective. As for the looming Ivan, bring him on!
