I wasn't sure where to post this, so, following the Sachem's instructions ("if you don't know where else to post it..."), here it is: On April 16 through 18 (this coming Friday through Sunday), Gettysburg is holding its "History Meets the Arts" festival. Here's the website (kind of funny, if you look at it from a certain angle): www.hmtarts.com Various shops in Gettysburg host painters, craftspeople, and writers whose art is devoted to history (any and all eras). Those who will be there include painters Robert Griffing, John Buxton, and David Wright, all of whom are well-known in Mohicanland, and gunsmith Frank House, who was involved in The Patriot. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never attended this event, even though it's only about 30 miles away. Every year I see the ad in Muzzleloader, every year I tell myself I'm going, but it just hasn't happened. It will this year, though, and I wanted to post this in case anyone else might be able to make the trip. |

Sounds like you and Sarge had a good time. I get depressed going to shows like that sometimes and seeing rifles whose cost is greater than my bi-monthly bills. But seeing colonial art and meeting the artists is always a plus.
Didn't see HM tarts, 42ndNCO, but then I didn't visit the shop called "The Octagon, A Ladies' Repository"....
Oh well, nice wholesome girls were always my first preference anyway

Say, that does sound like a good idea! I hope you had a safe and rewarding journey, Sergeant Munro. Certainly the weather was a blessing. I didn't spend TOO much money, met my favorite artist, Robert Griffing, and saw many examples of truly fine craftsmanship, including a rifle made by Wayne Watson, maker of Killdeer. BTW, feel free to commandeer any of H.M. tarts for camp follower duties -- lol!

Tis a shame that I will miss you on saturday, Lady Bookworm. I see that you reside near the 'civilized' part of the turnpike (If there is such a creature). I have driven the route from Pittsburgh to York bi-monthly (Harrisburg West Exit), to visit my two daughters, for the last twelve years. I always breath a sigh of relief once I pass east of Sidling Hill, since the road conditions improve a wee bit.
The Somerset to Bedford stretch has been particularly trying these last few years, since the PA Turnpike Comission is always 'building a better future'. My father patroled that road for 29 years, and he said that in all that time he never once remembered when the western sector wasn't 'under construction'. Lady Bookworm, I raise my glass in salute to you, a fellow Turnpike Road Warrior...

Ah yes, the good ol' Pennsylvania Turnpike! I know well the journey ahead of you, Sergeant Munro, because my first job after law school was a clerkship with a judge in Beaver, PA. I know you know where that is, but for those who don't -- about 35 miles northwest of Fort Pitt. I went there intending to stay for a year or two, and stayed for eight. Since my family was in central PA and my husband's was in Reading, even farther to the east, we became quite familiar with the Turnpike. Then my husband decided to attend the same law school I had attended, even though it was located back here in Carlisle, so my last three years out in your neck of the woods were spent in a commuter marriage. Time was I could recite, in correct sequence, the restaurants in every rest stop along the way, both coming and going. Your high opinion of the Gettysburg event, and your dedication in making the long trek there and back, have made me even more determined not to miss it. I am very sorry that I won't have the honor of making your acquaintance, as I will be attending it on Saturday.
I really wish you could come too, Sachem! As for the website, my husband says it suggests an unusual British espionage unit in WWI, "His Majesty's Tarts." |

I'm definitely going. I went for the first time last year, and it was truly worth the four hour drive (including the 'well maintained' PA Turnpike). I understand that they changed locations this year, but it is still only a few blocks from where it was.
