Old topic... but I wanted to revive it. I purchased this DVD a while back, and yesterday, I finally had the time to sit and watch the whole thing, Special Features and all.

WOW.

I have been a huge fan of this movie ever since it came out. There are so many good things to say about it. I've watched it... usually in parts... on TV several times, complete with commercial interruptions. This was the first time I had seen it non-stop, in its entirety, since I saw it in the theater.

I completely agree with both Rich and Sus. The added footage is absolutely marvelous, and it really fills in some gaps. This has made The Perfect Movie even more perfect.

The Special Features are also great. There are lots of interviews that were made both at the time of the filming, and in 2003 when this DVD came out. Lots of great insights into why things were done the way they were.

I have to say that I have come away from this viewing with a new respect for Kevin Kostner. What he managed to do, with the help of his two friends, Michael Blake (book and screenplay author) and Jim Wilson (one of the producers), is just short of miraculous. I feel that he set America on the path toward respecting and even honoring Native Americans, and began the process of healing. He most certainly changed the way Hollywood views, treats, and portrays Indians. He deserved the two Oscars he won for this movie.

I just bought this, the extra footage is PRIMO. You get the sense that Dunbar is spooked by the vast expanse of the prairie. I also enjoyed the new scene that is added the night before the buffalo hunt, we see that the band that Dunbar has befriended has caught up with the white hunters that left all the carcasses on the prairie, the group included women as well as men and they were scalped. When he sees the scalp of long blonde, curly hair hanging from a pole it cuts to the familiar scene of Dunbar sleeping just outside the camp. He states that he can't sleep with them that night, he's uncomfortable and he hopes they understand why. Without seeing that his friends have scalped whites his discomfort doesn't make sense. Now we see that it is not just the Pawnee (including Wes Studi as a bad-ass warrior) that are taking action against whites. Though the scalpings may be justified it adds an extra dimension that just wasn't there before. We also get to see the original inhabitants of Fort Sedgewick leaving, they state that all of their horses have been stolen by Indians, we don't know which tribe. It's nice not to see such a sugar-coated portrayal of natives. All around excellent DVD, if you don't buy it you should definitely rent it.

I just ordered three DVDs through the site. (It's easy, folks. I wouldn't order from Amazon any other way.) Skins, with Eric Schweig and Graham Greene, is very intense, but very good. Atanarjuat, the Fast Runner is out of this world awesome. It is in Inuktitut with English subtitles, and was made with an entirely Inuit cast and crew. I strongly encourage any of you interested in First Nations peoples (and everyone else too) to see it. I guarantee, you'll be blown right out of the water.
