Posted - January 31 2003 : 4:53:47 PM Ok ok...I know that I am months behind on the subject of Black Hawk Down, but I finally got to see the DVD a week or so ago, and I just wanted to say...I liked it! I must admit to watching it with a slightly cynical eye...I did expect it to be a bit more US gung-ho, and not very accurate...but I was fairly pleasantly surprised. It took the necessary liberties Hollywood must take to condense the whole story and number of people involved into a manageable quantity, but aside from that, I thought it seemed a reasonably accurate portrayal of events. I must admit, I really enjoyed the extras on the DVD too, the 'making of' documentary was extremely entertaining - don't skip that, if you rent the DVD.
I am halfway through the book by Mark Bowden now, and enjoying it tremendously. It is quite hard to put down. Naturally, the book covers the story in a great deal more detail, and talks of all the people involved, including stories from some of the Somali people and their perception of events. Heartily recommend it.
I haven't seen Gangs of New York yet, which has just been released here, but I did see a 'Making Of' documentary on television the other night, and there was one thing that struck me above everything else, and that was Daniel Day-Lewis' voice! Has anyone else noticed that his voice never sounds the sams in any two films? It isn't just a question of accent....his whole voice seems to change completely. It's quite extraordinary...Newland Archer....Hawkeye...Cecil Vyse..Bill the Butcher...never the same voice...

I know that no one is going to believe this but I haven't seen GONY yet either. Going to try to remedy that this weekend. And as for the voice thing...that's called GREAT ACTING! Surely the Academy will recognize that as opposed to the Golden Globes.
