Coming on July 1 is Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp as John Dilinger & Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis. Violence & nudity: what's not to like?

I agree with Rich on this one. I just saw it this afternoon and loved it. They used a special filming technique for the shoot out scenes and it made them so much more realistic...I almost felt as if I were right there in the thick of it. JD was brilliant as Dillinger and I loved "Billie" (was there even such a person in real life?). I definitely recommend it to all. I did not find it too long. I too will be adding it to my DVD's. Thumbs up.

You know, Bookworm ... for about 10 minutes there I thought I had missed that red dress. It was, I don't know, maybe 30 minutes into the movie, and I thought to myself, "Hey, did I miss the dress?" As I watched, I reflected back on the opening scenes, and could not recall a red dress. Not to worry, it was soon there. Whew, crisis narrowly averted!!

Michael Mann, Dante Spinotti, Bonnie Timmerman ... familiar names all running by in the credits - all of LOTM fame. It showed. Very-Mohican-like shots throughout. Some forest running, lots of night scenes, glowing torches ... oh, but wait, this was the 1930's!!! Different movie.

Excellent one, too, I thought. If you liked the old Bonnie & Clyde film with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, you'll love this one. Very similar story. Predictable ending, but Mann wisely threw in a final scene that was very touching and left this gnarled old heart wanting to shed a few tears. I didn't find it as repetitious as you described, Mary, but I did love Johnny Depp's performance. He is a rare gem. Stephan Lang [Gettysburg] was a late-comer in the movie, but was solid and was in that very last scene.

This is a real classic gangster movie, with Pretty Boy Floyd, BabyFace Nelson, and of course, John Dillinger, the Mafia, and the forebearers to the FBI, the G-Men. Even J. Edgar Hoover is in there. As someone said in another review of this movie elsewhere, "NO other filmmaker has explored the psyches of people caught in extreme circumstances with the dominating consistency and cinematic power of Michael Mann."

Let's put it this way, I'll probably add the DVD to my collection!

I'm looking forward to your review, Sachem. I, too, thought "Heat" was awesome -- layer upon layer upon layer of dramatic complexity! (And, of course, Wes Studi.) I wasn't too impressed with "Miami Vice" when I saw it in the theater, but after watching it again at home I thought much more highly of it -- two love affairs with uncertain outcomes (and lovely actresses whom we don't see too often), a complicated plot with unusual bad guys, great action scenes, wild changes of scenery, excellent soundtrack, and, best of all, another great performance by Jamie Foxx. Maybe Michael Mann couldn't achieve that kind of complexity in "Public Enemies" because of the constraints imposed by reality -- he was telling a true story, after all. And maybe you'll see it differently and persuade me that my first impression was wrong!

I'll be seeing it this weekend. I like Depp, but I'm more interested in what Michael Mann is up to. His last foray into gangsterland, "Heat", was a killer!

Obes you know me so well but seriously my youngest girl, Rachel, who by the way turns 5 tomorrow to her, needs to be babysat so I can go see it and my eldest is always busy with work and fiancee as is my eldest son. I was hoping Cathy could babysit tonight but when she got home from work, alas she had already made plans so it will have to wait for another day or night. I prefer to go during the daytime anyway, always cheaper.

So Johnny Depp you handsome "stud-muffin" I will see you very soon at the movie theater I promise

I'll bet if AR was in it, you'd have seen it already!

Still trying to find a time to see this one.

My husband and I saw "Public Enemies" yesterday. He rated it more highly than I did. It's a good true-crime story; Johnny Depp is excellent (and he looks good, Joyce); the production and cinematography are first-rate, as is always the case with Michael Mann; the action scenes are exciting, especially the car chases. Late in the movie there's even a chase through the woods that may remind you of LOTM -- men looking over their shoulders as if Magua's on their heels!

My principal complaint is that the movie's too long and becomes repetitious -- capture, escape; bank robbery; capture, escape; bank robbery; etc. Of course, that's probably the way it was in real life, but for me it just dragged. And this is a DARK movie, visually -- that red dress that you see near the beginning is the brightest thing you'll see in the whole movie.

Yes, I do. Sometimes, it even races. Especially when I look at Johnny Depp!

Heh, heh, - I see you still "have a pulse" Joyce! ... ;)

Oh, this movie sounds good!! I remember Irish telling me a few months ago that up where she lives they were actually shooting some scenes to the movie up there. There's nothing better than Johnny Depp and Christian Bale together, can't wait!!
Obediah Posted - March 13 2009 : 10:40:58 AM
I stand corrected!

As my Dad once said, long ago, "When you're too old to look, you're dead!"

Besides, that "snow on the roof" type of remark is expected of me!

And just why not??? Wasn't it you who recently said, "There may be snow on the roof, but....."??

Woman, are you actually having lustful thoughts? Nah, didn't think so! It's hard to tell from the trailer, but it looks like just female nudity & very little of that, anyway. (I just threw that sentence into my previous post to sound clever.) Here's a line from the movie: "Put some clothes on, miss." Whatever it lacks in nudity, it more than makes up for in violence and bloodshed.
Wilderness Woman Posted - March 11 2009 : 1:04:23 PM
Ummmm.... soooooooo...... would you happen to know, Obi, who...... will actually be....... involved...... in that "nudity" bit?

[WW assumes an attitude of studied casualness, as she allows her imaginings to run freely with the thought of Johnny Depp in said situation.]
