Well, I see a lot about DDL winning the best actor at both the BAFTA and Academy Awards and too many other awards and nominations to list but no one has posted anything about how they liked/disliked the movie itself. What is the verdict on it??

As someone pointed out on another board, DDL is such a great actor and was amazing in this (although some have accused him of "over-acting") if another actor had taken the role of Daniel Plainview and not done such a great job with the role, the movie itself would have been "forgetable". I think that is true as DDL stands out in this movie and is responsible for the great reviews it got. The story itself is afterall, quite simple.

Well, I watched it last night and I totally agree with Rich, DDL was fantastic! I found the movie to be facinating and the acting superb! I highly recommend it.

WOW!

Daniel Day-Lewis is the best actor I have ever had the pleasure to watch perform ... role after role after very varied role, DDL excels ... every time. This was magnificent!

That said, this film excels, too. I did not find it boring at all. Maybe I was just so intrigued with watching and listening to Danny Boy's performance - and thinking, yet again, "This guy was Hawkeye?!?" - that I didn't notice. Clearly, it's not a fast-paced movie, but it was so very interesting. I loved the cinematography, the acting, the quirky, almost comical at times, soundtrack that was such a wonderful counterpoint to the dreary nature of the story ... but most of all, I loved wondering what the intended message of this film was. I still wonder ... I really liked it, though. It made me think!

"I'm done!" Too funny!

Well I watched it last night and I can certainly see why some would call it boring. Not a movie for everyone but I liked it for the most part. It is a slow moving story but does have some good action scenes like an oil well burning and they are trying to put it out and other drama going on at the same time especially with Daniel's "son" HW. This movie is very long at almost 3 hours but DDL's acting is excellent and I can see why he got his "Oscar" much deserved. I found the ending very sad because despite his worldly riches he really had nothing. I found what he calls his son at the end both funny and sad. I shall certainly remember that phrase as it stands out.

Me too. Next up on my "to see" list. I like to watch the movie first then decide if I want to buy it though.

Ordered today. I look forward to seeing this!

Your wait is over, Mr. Hawkeye Joe as there are now TWO releases of "There Will Be Blood" available for purchase (not sure if both are available for rent, though). One of these is the "collector's edition" which consists of 2 disks; but I would recommend that you rent the single DVD of the movie before making a decision on which to purchase. A review of the "collector's edition" (which I found on another website) appears below:

"There are no extras on the first disc which has a menu as plain as Daniel's view of the world. The second disc features a vintage silent featurette that runs about 27 minutes and uses Greenwood's score to accompany it. It tells the "story" of oil and shows us how oilmen hunted for it and brought it to market.

We also get "15 Minutes" a collection of vintage stills from the era taken around oil sites, behind-the-scenes footage and various clips showing all the work that Anderson and his crew put into researching the film. It's a silent segment accompanied by music and lasts, yep, just over 15 minutes.

Next up we two deleted scenes that last nearly ten minutes. Under three minutes "Dallies Gone Wild" is an alternate take of the restaurant scene involving Daniel, his son H.W. and employees of Standard Oil.

We also get the teaser for the film and the original theatrical trailer both of which remind me of the lost art of crafting a great trailer that will pull in an audience without giving away too much."

My recommendation would be to rent & view the single DVD of "There Will Be Blood." Once you've seen it, you can then decide for yourself whether or not to purchase the single DVD or the 2-disc "collector's edition" of this film.

No, I haven't seen it as of yet. I'm waiting til it's on DVD or PPV. From what I've heard, along with your post, it is a stellar performance in a pretty boring movie...sort of like having a silk purse inside a sow's ear....

Thank you very much, kind sir; I'm glad you liked what I wrote (and to have it called a "review" - WOW! I am indeed humbled). I am looking forward to hearing from others who have viewed this film, as well.

And what about you, Hawkeye Joe? Have you seen this movie yourself & if so, was it on "the big screen" or at home on DVD???

Very well thought out and written review.

My husband & I went to see "There Will Be Blood" back in February, when it FINALLY came to one of a handful of theaters in this part of VA (Hampton Roads aka Tidewater). My husband did not care for it at all & promptly re-named it "There Will Be Boredom."

For more than a year, I had been reading everything I could find about this film: the storyline, reviews, interviews, etc. I knew beforehand that this was not a film I would ordinarily be drawn to, BUT...with Daniel Day-Lewis in the starring role, I also knew that it was a "must see" for me. Now that I've seen the film in its entirety, I have to say that Daniel's performance alone made the film worthwhile. Once again, he has managed to completely immerse himself in his work & become someone else entirely - and you most definitely will NOT get Daniel Plainview confused with Hawkeye!

And since I've managed a mention of LOTM in this post (hey Rich - 6 degrees, right?!)...I can tell you that I won't be watching TWBB once or twice (or more!) a month, as I still do with LOTM.

But I digress; back to the topic at hand! I thought some of the very best scenes in the film took place between DD-L and Paul Dano (who portrayed the young evangalist preacher). I personally didn't care much for the soundtrack but that has also won its share of awards; so to each his own. The movie was also more violent that I expected & when those scenes came up on the screen, they reached out & grabbed you.

TWBB is definitely a "thinking man's" film. It's the type of film that hard-core film enthusiasts & acting coaches & aspiring actors will be talking about for a long, long time. This movie does have that "epic" feel about it & it doesn't do anything on a small scale. Watching it on the big screen made it even more impressive. As many of the reviews have stated, the film deals with many of the elements (greed, money, religion & power) that cause inner conflict and struggle for mankind but it also deals with the "blood" of family; and along the way, Daniel Plainview slowly loses his soul & his mind in his pursuit of what he perceives to be success.

Watching DD-L portray Daniel Plainview's descent into madness was certainly one of the most gripping performances I have ever seen, and while I am not "in love" with this film, I am very glad that I went to see it. More than anything else, it gave me the opportunity to see another brilliant performance from Daniel Day-Lewis, and I am more convinced than ever that he is an actor who is truly "a breed apart" and arguably THE BEST ACTOR of his generation.
