Okay, it is getting closer to Christmas, that time of year when we all love to sit in front of our tellies and curl up in a warm blanket with some popcorn and watch our favorite Christmas movies. So my question is this, what is your favorite Christmas movie to watch? It can be an old movie or a brand new one, maybe even one nobody else has ever heard of or perhaps one everyone else hates except for you So come on guys spill the beans. Which movie is it that when you watch it, you know Christmas is almost here and it puts you in the "holiday mood".

I shall start with my favorite Christmas movie, the one I have to watch every year and never tire of.

A Christmas Story

So there you have it. Who's up next

I was able to indulge again and watch "White Christmas" again on TV last Friday night. And again, I laughed at Danny Kaye's antics, swooned over Bing's crooning, and got a tear in my eye when the soldiers all came and surprised their General. Ahhhhhh! Doesn't get much better than that!

Another more recent favorite of mine that I always try to watch as close to Christmas Eve as I possibly can is "The Crossing." Just to remind me of their hardships and sacrifices...

I'm going say Gremlins too
But I always end up watching Lord of the Rings and Gone with the Wind, so they feel Christmassy to me
Irishgirl Posted - November 28 2007 : 10:16:56 PM
I loved Gremlins and then there is always the classic "Bad Santa"(kidding of course)
caitlin Posted - November 28 2007 : 10:16:30 PM
"Planes, Trains and Automobiles"
Christina Posted - November 28 2007 : 6:37:25 PM
"Gremlins" is also set during the holiday season and I always find that one hilarious, especially the scene in the movie theater.

We love "A Christmas Story" but as you said it gets played WAAY too much. "White Christmas" is good, but I'd have to skip it to watch "Holiday Inn" (the first movie where Der Bingle sang "White Christmas").

Just as The Caine Mutiny sounds a whole lot better than The Mickelwhite Mutiny...
Irishgirl Posted - November 15 2007 : 7:57:50 PM
Michael Caine does sound much better than Maurice Mickelwhite doesn't it?.
Obediah Posted - November 15 2007 : 1:02:29 PM
My two favorites are, not necessarily in this order:

Christmas Story -- even though my wife hates it.

Muppet Christmas Carol -- near the end, as the happy crowd marches through London on Christmas morning, they pass a store called "Mickelwhite's" ... and Michael Caine, of course, was born Maurice Mickelwhite.

I'm not a big Christmas person in general. Don't know why...not exactly a Scrooge but just not into the weeks and weeks of hype. Do have to say that I adore "A Christmas Story" especially the part with the leg lamp and when the kids go to visit the extremely scary Santa Claus with the slide in the department store.

Irishgirl Posted - November 12 2007 : 09:15:10 AM
I just recently watched this one, because of my guy AR, and I loved it. It was so funny. I would not have thought of it as a Christmas movie Bookworm but you are right, it takes place leading up to Christmas so I guess one could call it that. It was so funny and had a great cast. Only couple I thought we could do without was the "porn couple". Their part was un-necessary I thought and did not need to be in there at all.
Bookworm Posted - November 11 2007 : 10:26:38 PM
"Love Actually." I love the wedding scene, with "All You Need Is Love" popping out everywhere, and Bill Nighy's over-the-hill rocker, and the guy who silently adores his best friend's wife, and Hugh Grant as the prime minister who goes caroling, and Emma Thompson as the wife who makes a sad discovery, and Liam Neeson cheering on his son in pursuit of a girlfriend . . . Well, it takes place around Christmas, anyway!

GG and Kay, I have to agree that "Little Women" is the one of the best movies to watch at Christmas! I totally forgot about that one till you mentioned it. I could watch that movie in the middle of the summer and it would put me in the mood for Christmas right away.

OH, Irish, thanks for the advice about "Deck the Halls". I'll save my money!
Kaylynn44 Posted - November 10 2007 : 11:29:33 PM
GG,
I LOVE Little Women!!! I can watch this movie any time of year!!!

Irish,
I have never see Deck The Halls, but I will take your word for it and not watch it.

Love,
Kay

Little Women is always a must see the Christmas Season at our house. Not exactly a Christmas Movie, but it seems that way to us.
Irishgirl Posted - November 10 2007 : 10:36:16 PM
Okay, just to let you all know Deck the Halls is not a good movie. Just got through with it and I kept hoping it would "improve" but alas that did not happen. Avoid that one is my advice to you all and I generally love Christmas movies.

I LOVE Christmas movies!!!!!! Here are some of my favorites.

Miracle On 34th Street (Oh, Christmas isn't just a day, it's a frame of mind)

A Christmas Carol
(God bless us, everyone)

It's A Wonderful Life
(Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings)

The Little Match Girl
(She took the little maiden, on her arm, and both flew in brightness and in joy so high, so very high, and then above was neither cold, nor hunger, nor anxiety--they were with God.

Love,
Kay

I can't tell you how many times I have watched this movie - ever since my childhood - and I still absolutely adore it. How can you get any better than the music of Irving Berlin, sung by such icons as Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney? How can you get any better than the gorgeous dancing of Vera Ellen, and the zany slapstick comedy of the great Danny Kaye? You can't! It just doesn't get any better than "White Christmas."

I have found another rather unlikely favorite. Sometimes the syrupy-sweet made for TV movies that are done on the Hallmark channel are a bit much to take for me. However, there is one that I really like that was made in 1999. It stars Carla Gugino, and Patty Duke has a cameo role. It is a very feel good kind of movie, but it has some interesting plot twists to it. It is called "A Season for Miracles." Look for it on the Hallmark Channel this season.

Ain't that the truthbut I still love it. Would not be Christmas without it. Guess what, I even watched it last night for the first time because I have the movie. Nice to see it "in the lead" so far.

Another I have to see every year is Chevy Chase's "Christmas Vacation". Just love that one too.

Anyone seen "Deck the Halls" yet? I really want to see that one. I guess I will go to the video store here in a little bit to see if it is in.

Oh Red, I loved "Jingle All the Way" with Arnold and Sinbad. I like the funny ones not the "cheesy, sappy ones".

By all means, "A Christmas Story". That's a tradition in our household to watch this movie every season. It never gets old!! It's a timeless classic!! And remember, "You'll shoot your eye out...."

I love Christmas movies, so I have lots of favorites:
Rudolph
Grinch - cartoon
Frosty
Charlie Brown Christmas
Nightmare Before Christmas
Scrooge
It's a Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story
and though it's not really a "Christmasy" movie, I always have liked The Ref with Kevin Spacey.

Think that about covers it...
RedFraggle Posted - November 10 2007 : 10:26:01 AM
I'm not generally a Scrooge, and I typically love almost everything about the Christmas season, but holiday-themed movies are one thing that I just don't enjoy. Maybe that's because I've seen a string of really bad ones over the past few years--who knows?---but I'm generally not so much a fan.

I guess if I had to pick a favorite holiday movie it would be A Muppet Christmas Carol or the Disney version with Scrooge McDuck. And, of course, there are the yearly Rudolph and Grinch specials. I know they're kids' programs but they put me in a holiday mood much better than, say, watching Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad fight over a toy, or Ben Affleck and James Gandolfini squabble over a Christmas tree. And I wouldn't touch the new Fred Clause movie with a ten-foot pole.

But that's just me.

"A Christmas Story". Like it so much that everybody in my family got a "lamp" ornament for Christmas last year. How 'bout it Karen? LOL!

With out a doubt, far and away, "A Christmas Carol" -- the Charles Dickens tale. I like the original best - pre-George Scott.
