Posted - October 24 2007 : 11:46:21 AM When she first sat in the little cafe 17 years ago and started writing, I somehow doubt that when she created "Dumbledore" master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, that she thought to herself "I know he will be gay". If that was the case she would have written him into the books that way, not "kept it secret". She knew if she did that, the books would not sell like they did with an "openly gay character". She is a smart woman that JKR. I think she said what she said last Friday night to be "PC" and cause just what she did "controversey". It has folks talking even more about her books, which I love and am a big fan of. I always wondered why Dumbledore was not married and just assumed he was devoted to the school and his work. Never did I think for one second that he was "gay".
True she is a billionarie from these very books and I just feel like she "betrayed our trust" in her by saying what she did. |

Posted - October 24 2007 : 10:42:46 AM I don't think JKR cares about the money or the publicity anymore, if she ever did. She's incredibly rich as it is, and can surely find a publisher for anything she wants to write. Also, and more important, she's an incredibly creative person, as the author of the Harry Potter series would have to be, and so she has probably created (in her mind, not on paper) a backstory for each of her characters. There are gay people in the real world, so, no surprise, there are gay people in her world. I've never looked at the fan websites, but nevertheless have the impression that she's always been honest with her fans. If someone asks whether Dumbledore was ever in love, she'll answer. She could have given just a yes or no answer, but since the answer is "yes," there would inevitably be the follow-up question, "with whom?" As for those who are inclined to rant and rave about the evils of Harry Potter, well, I'd hate to see JKR or anyone else trim her sails to try to satisfy them. Not to mention that she's provided plenty of examples of straight relationships (I'll try to avoid spoilers): Harry, Hermione, and Ron, each of whom has shown plenty of interest in the opposite sex, Harry's parents, the Weasleys, numerous secondary characters, the Dursleys (there's a model relationship for you). . . and let's not forget the bravest man Harry ever knew, who loved one woman his whole life long. |

Posted - October 24 2007 : 07:12:24 AM Me too Irish, it seems like she did it for the attention and shock value...she must have known many fans would be unhappy about it...I'm not bothered either way I just think it didn't need to be said, like you said Irish |

Posted - October 23 2007 : 10:23:48 PM Yes Obi it is a fictional character which makes it all the more silly that she "outed" him.
Red, she has always stated she is done after the 7th book so no prequels or sequels. I think she just wants to "stir things up" by throwing that out and have us all talking, which we are doing. Some boards, have people going at each others throats over this. She should not have said what she did. She was asked a question about whether Dumbldore had ever been in love. She should simply have stated yes or no.
Almost afraid of what she will come out and say next about one of the other "beloved characters" in this series. |

Posted - October 23 2007 : 8:39:01 PM C'mon guys! This is just a fictional character, after all! |

Posted - October 23 2007 : 5:57:31 PM I agree that it's all about publicity. The fact that Dumbledore has been "outed" will generate some new fans, alienate some of the old ones, get fundamentalists up in arms, and have everybody talking about it, just like we are now. That probably equals a lot more $$$ and book sales for JKR. A pretty smart move, if you're after the dough . . . and maybe the chance to write prequels to the existing Harry Potter series. There is probably a whole crowd of readers---adults and teens alike---wondering about Dumbledore's past now. In short, anyone else see a new line of books aimed at a slightly older crowd in the works? |

Posted - October 20 2007 : 12:22:30 PM Wow, I was kinda shocked to read that not because of the gay issue but because it seems very unnecessary. In the books Dumbledore's love life is never discussed so why bring it up after the books have finsihed? I think you are right Irish, publicity is what it's all about.

Posted - October 20 2007 : 08:16:57 AM I agree Christina and thought along the same lines. Why come out with this now, more publicity I guess.
Even in the wizarding world it seems we can't get away from this issue. I wonder did Severus know or suspect? Leading to another question...what about McGonagall? |

Posted - October 20 2007 : 12:09:48 AM and if it was unrequited, was he ever ACTUALLY gay or did he just have tendencies?
I hate that she revealed this even if she is true, because this will add new fuel to the fire for the Bob Jones evangelical wackos in our state who have always wanted to ban Harry Potter anyway. |
