Looking to see if anybody knows a free source for the sheet music for "Going Home" as done in Gods and Generals opening credits, and closing credits. Specifically, Treble score. More specifically, for violin if possible. Yes, the gnome is learning to play the violin/fiddle. Don't get all excited, am a rank beginner working through 1st Suzuki book, but like to add in additional challenges to keep my interest. Can play Silent Night, Amazing Grace, Dixie, Bonnie Blue Flag, and some other stuff. Also got a book of sheet music and CD of Baroque pieces written specifically for the 1st position of violin. Working on that too. So much to do, so little time. Anyway, anybody know where I might get that music score?

Whatever you do with it WW, is greatly appreciated. I'm not really a musician at all. Had the ubiquitous piano lessons when I was young. That's it. Haven't touched anything until I decided to try the violin. It does seem to make sense to me though. When I hear a simple tune, I can imagine which strings and fingerings that would be. IF it's simple, and IF it's in violin or piano, and IF it's first position! As to the sharps and flats, I'll work that out.
Just grateful you are willing to put yourself out to work it up!
As to Mrs gnome's status, she's just dandy. Still working at UW hospital. She quit smoking four weeks ago. I'm quitting on Saturday (knock on wood. Where's Doc Mary's head when you need to do some wood knocking on?). |

It sounds like you have an "ear" for music, Bill. If you can pick out part of the tune, you are "playing by ear," as they say. Are you already a musician?
Can you play any sharps or flats yet? I can't guarantee I will get the tune in the same key in which Mary Fahl sings it, but will try to get it close. However, if there are a lot of sharps or flats, I will transpose it into a simpler key, if I can. So you may not be able to play along with the CD! But at least you will be able to play it. |

Wow, Bill..I too am impressed. But I think what I'm impressed with most is the fact that a Yankee has learned to play Dixie...and Bonnie Blue Flag! Just kidding...good luck! |

Hey that would be great WW. I also tried to find it online, and only came up with the lyrics. Even having a "Fake" score would be great! The very quiet opening bars I could figure out, but once it takes off into the piece itself I am immediately lost!
I have always loved the violin/fiddle as music. Figured what the heck, should try to learn it just enough at least to be fun for me, the church, and family. Or small gatherings of friends. Betty is also trying to learn, but less time spent on it due to her schedule.
Yup. That's a truly lovely song, and a tear jerker. I'd love to have your transcribed rendition! At my level of playing "close enough for government work" is my credo!

Now see what you've gone and done, Bill? You've made my fingers itch!! You've made me want to root around under my bed (now, now... I said under... not in!), disturbing the dust, to locate my violin. The only other time that happens is when I hear "The Gael!"
I have to say that I am impressed! Learning the violin is not an easy task at any age. I doubt that you will be able to find the music online for free. The lyrics are there, but I can't locate the music. If you will be patient, I will try to transcribe it off the CD for you. I would actually like to have that myself!
