In honor of Valentine's Day, let's have a poll and see what everybody's favorite romance movies are.
We all know that LOTM is the #1 romance movie, but after LOTM, what would your pick be?

Ok I have to put my 2 cents in once again! I own both the dvd and vhs box set of Pride and Prejudice. Awesome movie. And yes ladies...Colin Firth is to die for....but nothing comapred to Eric Schweig! Sense and Sensibility was also an amazing movie. Col. Brandon may be old but he is like a fine wine...only gets better with age! The same goes for Sean Connery! As for the English Patient...wow! It makes me bawl my eyes out when the hero is carrying the woman up to the cave after the plane crash. Seeing him cry when she gives him the thimble ( I think that is how it went..been so long since I saw it) makes my heart break. Then him being held prisoner while she is out there alone dying oh man. And the worst part is when he finally returns and finds her dead. Ok here come the water works! Anyways. I voted for none of the above. My movie of Choice is "Stolen Women Captured Hearts".

I love everything about the movie. The stern nature of the hero and the strength of the Heroine. Just when you think that the heroine has no feelings for the hero....she tries to escape, he catched her, they have a fight, he pulls her close and BAM! There is the heart tugging kiss. Makes you feel all warm and cozy inside! What is even more heart felt is when the heroine leaves her husband to take her place at the studly native's side! Nothing like seeing a grown man fall to his knees and cry over the loss of a love. Kinda makes your heart feel like it's on tug of war! Anyways for those that have seen the movie you know what I mean and for those who haven't....you really need to see it!

Don't know if anyone is still reading this thread, or not...but I had to add two of my favorite romance films (also included them in my "alltime favorites" films on another poll). Anyone ever see "Like Water For Chocolate"? I loved that! Another film I would have to add for my choice would be "The Quiet Man". WW - I'd forgotten about "Murphy's Romance": but I really like that one too. Always have loved James Garner! It just occured to me that, although the whole series doesn't exactly fit the category, the love story of Aragorn and Arwen in LOTR is another one of my alltime favorites. Who *wouldn't* give up immortality for that guy?!

For the best sad ending love story, I'd have to go with "Sommersby." The ending just blew me away.

Chris,
I have to agree with you that Sommersby has the saddest ending of any movie that I have seen. Even though I know what is going to happen, I cry every time that I watch it.

Love,
Kay

I think the best happy-ending love story is "Sense and Sensibility", not just because there are 4 very VERY happy characters, but I love the way Alan Rickman played his role, as compared to the other role of his that is also a favorite: The Sheriff of Nottingham.

For the best sad-ending love story, I would pick "Cold Mountain". The love was pure, acknowledged and resulted in a sublime strength and sweetness: the daughter and her mother who learned what love really is. Gosh! I sound corny! But I am sticking to my guns with these two. I cry at the end of either of these EVERY time I see them.

And I am also remembering that LOTM is number one!

Hugh Jackman is MEGA DROOLWORTHY. And there's a scene where he rides a horse through Grand Central Park to get her purse from a mugger...I don't know why, but I just found the whole movie charming.

Christina,
I liked Kate and Leopold too. Even though the whole concept of time travel isn't really my thing, I did like the movie. And yes, Hugh Jackman is VERY droolworthy!!!

Love,
Kay

OK, Ladies... get those drool-cloths out!

We are referring to the 1995 A & E production of "Pride." And here is Mr. D'arcy, as played by Colin Firth.

Oh, YUM!!!!!

I agree about "Sense and Sensibility" - but I was wondering what version of "Pride and Prejudice" you all are talking about? Mine was a PBS version and it's about 3 hrs - doesn't have the above D'Arcy. Thanks

Whip me with a wet noodle, but I couldn't get into TEP either. I've never been able to sit all the way through it...don't quite know why, but it's just one of those movies.
I'm actually not that big a romance fan but the other week I found myself entranced by "Kate and Leopold" , the Meg Ryan-Hugh Jackman flick where he's the 19th century duke teleported into 1990s Manhattan. I'm not a big Meg Ryan fan but Hugh Jackman is MEGA DROOLWORTHY. And there's a scene where he rides a horse through Grand Central Park to get her purse from a mugger...I don't know why, but I just found the whole movie charming.

Aye, sorry, I just couldn't get into TEP. I'm not a big fan of Ralph, either...but Joseph is droolworthy. :D
Kaylynn44 Posted - February 19 2005 : 9:52:31 PM
Because it's his brother Joseph who is in Shakespear in Love. :) It's still very worth seeing.

AHA!!! That is why I haven't seen it then, but I am going to have to watch it, even if it doesn't have Ralph in it.
Hated "The English Patient"??? Say it isn't so!!! It has Ralph Fiennes and Colin Firth in it!!! I just love Juliette Binoche too. Not the same way that I love Ralph and Colin, but you know what I mean.

Love,
Kay

I didn't vote because none of those listed stirred the romantic side of me enough. Shakespeare in Love, Ever After, LOTM of course, and a few others do though. I *hated* The English Patient.

If anyone has watched MI-5 (aka Spooks in the UK), Matthew MacFadyen used to be on there as a main character.

I'm not really a 'romance' movie watcher. Howsever, my most favourite HAS GOT TO BE 'Wuthering Heights'! I just LOVE the psychological dynamics of the characters and surely, when you consider all the things that Heathcliff did for love of Cathy, can that depth of passion be equalled??

My second favourite would be 'The English Patient'... there was such a dream-like quality to it that had me entranced. I just LOVED the story and, of course, I just LOVED the location where the film was set. (I have to admit to being in love with Middle Eastern scenery and a lot of it's culture (though I recognise and dislike it's bad points too).) Tunisia is beautiful and I had a wonderful time there and in Morocco, where it was filmed.

One of my favourite 'Colin Firth' roles was in the movie 'Tumbledown'. That certainly wasn't his most handsome rôle (note I have learned how to put a circomeflex in!! Yay!! ) but his portrayal of his character was just amazing!

I guess I'm just more into the mysteries of why someone feels as they do toward another, and where those feelings take him, than 'how long it takes him to get the girl'...

I've been accused of not having a romantic bone in my body... I'm sad, I know...

WW,
I have never seen "Murphy's Romance", but I have seen "While you Were Sleeping" and I really liked it!!! I love comedy romance almost as much as I do the tear jerking romance films.
Another one of my favorites that I just saw yesterday for the umpteenth times is "Jane Eyre." I should have put that one on the list too!!!

Love,
Kay

Has anyone ever seen "Murphy's Romance"? I really like this one. It stars Sally Field and James Garner, in a May-December, unlikely-couple romance. Really cute!

Another one I enjoy watching is "While You Were Sleeping." This stars Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman.

I am a huge Jane Austen fan so I must vote for "Pride and Prejudice", although if "Sense and Sensibility" had been on the ballot, I would have chosen that as my favorite.

Carter,
Sense and Sensibilty was good, but I preferred Pride and Prejudice. I wonder if it has anything to do with a guy that can make ladies swoon just by the look in his eye.
Really, any of Jane's works are brilliant!!! I love them all!!!

Love,
Kay

Chocolat. An endearing performance by Johnny Depp and scene after scene of chocolate delicacies. See also, Like Water for Chocolate. Steamy sex AND chocolate.

I sense a pattern here...

Ann,
Yes, I sense a pattern too. Just as long as you don't add Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Love,
Kay

PS I might have to check out Like Water for Chocolate. Sounds interesting!!!

Colin Firth is the king of smouldering eyes. He can run through every emotion without ever moving a facial muscle! <Need a swoon smiley with hand on fainting forehead here> I swear he can make his eye sparkle on command!

Be warned, have a huge box of tissues... you will need them!

Caitlin,
With all of the tear jerkers that I watch, I keep plenty of tissues close by!!!

Love,
Kay

I'm with you on Pride and Prejudice!!! Being 6 hours long, I can't watch it just whenever, so I will pick cold or rainy weekend day and make a day of it! THe VHS version picture quality is SO much better than the DVD (go figure), so I tolerate the cassette changing to have the more fibrant color. Colin Firth is the king of smouldering eyes. He can run through every emotion without ever moving a facial muscle! <Need a swoon smiley with hand on fainting forehead here> I swear he can make his eye sparkle on command!

Matthew McFayden looks okay, but like you said, he is no Colin Firth!!! I will still probably watch it though.
