Depends on your definition of horror.

Posted - January 11 2007 : 08:04:19 AM I picked "The Exorcist" b/c it's the only movie on the list that I've actually seen and liked. I'm not so much a horror fan. I just find horror flicks laughable. Freddie Krueger? Pinhead? The chick from "The Grudge"? Not scary to me.
Two movies that did kind of give me the creeps are "The Haunting of Hill House" (though it was in general a lame flick) and "A Tale of Two Sisters." "Haunting" was creepy to me because of the children's voices and because the spirits were invisible. Kids are always creepy in horror movies, if you ask me, and I just hate it when the monster/ghost in a horror film turns out to be cheesy-looking or not at all scary. I much prefer invisible ghoulies.
"Two Sisters" is a Korean-language film (with subtitles, of course!) that keeps you guessing as to what really happened until the end, which, to quote IMDB, "forces you to reevaluate all that has gone before." Was there a murder or not? Who/what is the ghost? Is there a ghost at all? The movie boasts some of the same type of effects as "The Grudge," so if you liked that movie you may want to check out "Two Sisters." I personally found it to be creepier than any Freddie Krueger or Chainsaw freak movie. But that's just my opinion!
Oh, I also like the "Alien" saga, but I think that falls more under sci-fi than horror (as I think someone said above). |

Aye Lass, I am in full agreement with you. My favorites of the saga still has to be the first and second ones. The original Alien was like the Exorcist of Sci-Fi, that being it broke new ground in both storyline and SFX. The second one I liked because the behavior of the marines was very belivable (I was in the service when it came out in 1986, and I thought "Hey, those are the guys from my squad... Yeah, the look a little different, but it is the same personality types"), and also the exploration of the concept of 'ant-colony' behavior of the Aliens.
With all respect to Obediah, the other movies in the saga were meant more for the hard-core geek fans (Like me), and therefore most of the normal moviegoers could not see the same value in them.

"A rose by any other name..." Scifi or horror, they sure scared the bejaysus out of me. Now, Alien 3 & Alien 4, they were just horrible movies. |

And..
Actually, IG, I dislike most horror movies (surprised?); Alien & Aliens being the main exceptions to that. |

Well I voted for Friday the 13th as I loved those movies when they came out. I think I saw up to the 3rd or 4th before I got a life and gave up on them or just didn't have the time anymore to watch them. |

Posted - September 18 2005 : 10:40:13 PM I think the Texas chainsaw massacre left a great impression because it was based on a true story. Jaws, well, that can be true too and God knows I spent a long time watching my feet in the shower. Actually, I won't go in the ocean above my ankles to this day! I'm not a great scarey movie watcher, you know, the kind who watches between the fingers? Brave eh? I remember a scarey movie but only a part of it. Maybe someone will remember this one. A girl was upstairs of an old two story house. She looked outside to see a couple of guys draging big duffel bags across the yard and into the woods. She went down to look for her friends, (they were young adults), they were all dead except for one girl and she was badly beaten. She wispered to her friend to run, that they would kill her too and promptly died. The other girl heard steps coming closer and ran back upstairs. The guys came in and one noticed a sandle on the stairs, one that wasn t there previously. I changed the channel and I often wonder what happened.
The grudge was stupid I thought. They dont make movies like they used to.

Posted - September 15 2005 : 1:42:33 PM Yes that movie was indeed Basketcase... Did you know there was a sequel where the little guy found a mate! The movies that had the most impact on me were the ones I seen as a kid in theaters. It's Alive, I went home and ended up having to throw away all my baby dolls because I couldn't sleep thinking they were going to come alive. Black Christmas, Made me think there was someone in the attic. Jaws, Couldn't swim in the ocean for about five years. And I couldn't finish Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I did later when I grew up, but at the time it was too much stress for me. It's Alive has had two sequals, both very cheesy nothing is as good as the origianl. There is one I seen but can only remember one part of the film, I think the rest of the time I was buried in my mothers coat. The scene was a very small man (midget i think) who would sneek into the bedroom of a sleeping couple and inject the man with a needle. Thats all I remember except a tall skinny man who had long hair and was pale. Like the guy from Phantasm but with overalls. Does that ring a bell anyone? |

Posted - April 28 2005 : 12:02:50 PM I voted for the "Exorcist." I saw it for the first time on a dare while in sixth grade and I can honestly say that I slept with a light on for the next year and a half. I'm a huge horror fan and can honestly say that no movie has messed up my mind more than that one. To this day I can't watch it all the way through! |

Posted - April 28 2005 : 10:19:40 AM Okay, here is one for you movie buffs.... I seem to remember a real cheesy 70's movie about a person with two heads? I think one guy was about to die so they put his head on someone else's body. One head was a black man and the other a white man and they kept fighting for dominance over the body

Posted - April 27 2005 : 11:21:34 PM I found this hot info on "Basket Case" on IMDB- sound like the one?
Basket Case (1982) Directed by Frank Henenlotter Tagline: The tenant in room 7 is very small, very twisted and very mad. Plot Summary: A young man carrying a big basket, containing his deformed Siamese brother is seeking revenge on the doctors who separated them. (more) (view trailer) User Comments: 1 out of 1 people found the following comment useful:- "What's in the basket?", 26 March 2002 Author: Backlash007 from Kentucky Basket Case--a grotesque classic from director Frank Henenlotter. It's the fairy tale story of two brothers separated at age twelve, literally. You see, Duane and Belial Bradley are as close as two brothers can get, they're siamese twins. But they're not quite identical. Belial is an angry, little mutant while Duane is a regular looking kid (except for the mutant protruding from his side). Their father hires a team of doctors to perform an operation to separate the brothers, hoping that Belial will die in the process. But the surgery only makes matters worse, now Belial is free to wreak havoc. Years later, the Bradley brothers travel to New York to find the doctors responsible...and rip their faces off. Basket Case scores with originality. The film has a dirty, grainy quality that is highly reminiscent of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In fact, everything about this movie is dirty, from the Hotel Broslin to the streets of New York at night. It proves that you can do alot with a little budget; you can tear people's faces off, create a gruesome stopmotion freak, and spawn two sequels. There are some things I didn't like though. The acting for example. I can honestly say that no real actors were used in filming (except the cop, he seemed believable). Most of the people in the film are just plain CRAZY. Also, Duane running nude through the city streets was totally unnecessary. I still enjoy the film's savageness and think it's a great addition to the horror genre. If you don't like Basket Case, don't give up on old Frank. Check out his movie Brain Damage (and watch for the man with the wicker basket). |
