While researching online for information regarding Descriptive Video Services for an article I am writing for our agency newsletter, I found something that may be of interest to some of you.

There is an organization called Narrative Television Network, which is a leader in providing described television programs and movie videos for people who are blind or visually impaired. They have a website, and on their website is a page that has a list of about 53 old classic movies that have "described narrative", which is added to the quiet moments in between dialogue. This narrative tells blind people what they cannot see, such as character appearance, scene settings, and movements.

Well, much to my surprise, I saw that "Last Of The Mohicans" is listed. So I went exploring and discovered that this is the 1936 version with Randolph Scott and Binnie Barnes as his love interest, Alice.

I haven't watched the entire thing yet, but did sit and watch the first 1/2 hour last night. It requires Real Player, which is a freebie, and the quality of the video is not the best. The sound quality comes and goes, depending on who is speaking. However, you should be able to get a pretty good idea of the storyline and what is going on. In fact, the narrative actually helps a great deal due to the poor video quality. (Remember, blind people can't see it anyway!) So check it out when you have about an hour and a half of time to kill.

Go to www.narrative.org and click on "Enjoy free narrated programming on the web NOW!"

Hi,

I've seen it - it's not a bad film to be fair! Completely different to the Mann version but much closer to the original story.
