We just saw "Hidalgo," starring Viggo Mortensen and Omar Sharif, and recommend it highly. It isn't any sort of instant classic, just a good, well-made, very enjoyable adventure story, with a nice subplot (which I didn't expect) about Viggo's character reclaiming his Indian heritage. Excellent acting, and a very likable horse! One of the Indian actors is Floyd Red Crow Westerman -- recognize the name, can't remember where I've seen him. There's a real-life happy ending, too -- I read that after the filming ended, Viggo bought the horse because he liked him so much, so there's no glue factory in his future.

Just out of curiosity, how was the software altering "document"?

I saw Hidalgo at the theater and enjoyed it. I went because I love Viggo
("Return of the King") and horses. It was great to see how well he rides.
He practically grew up on the back of a horse. And yes, it was nice to
see he bought the horse from the movie to add to his other horses.
Some of the plot was pretty wacky. But, oh well, it was entertaining.

I've been to Chincoteague, VA to see the wild ponies swim the channel.
I also went to the auction of the young ones. It was heart breaking to
see them separated from their Mothers. The families who buy them are
overjoyed to get one. They go for a hefty price. They're registered
as a breed.

I just rented "Hidalgo". Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but I did find myself rolling my eyes at some of the characters and plot elements---the sheik's daughter, the cute little slave boy, the plots to stop Frank/Hidalgo from winning, etc. But, the film really does show the brutality of the horse race. I was awed by the desert scenery, and that horse was awesome! It was also good to see Omar Sharif again.

I really loved the scene at the end, with the herd of mustangs running free. (There's something we don't get to see much of, unless you go to see the ponies at Chincoteague Island).

I just watched this today and thought that it was pretty sweet. The locations and cinematography are beautiful. I loved Mr. Mortenson's portrayal of Frank Hopkins, it's a really interesting story. It's not quite Lawrence of Arabia but it's definitely an excellent "desert" film. I also enjoyed that it was rather long, 2 hours 16 minutes.

Fixed that little problem ... very odd, indeed!

Very strange, WW -- I had the same problem with "documents" in another post. The correction just wouldn't take.

Bookworm,
I would really like to see this movie, partly because it looks like a rollicking good time and partly because of the interesting controversy surrounding the story.

I watched an interesting program on TV that was shown about the time the movie opened. I think it was on the History channel and it was about the real Frank Hopkins. There is some doubt as to whether his exploits and adventures actually happened or were his own fabrication. After watching the program, I cannot decide what I think about him. The main problem is that there doesn't seem to be any proof in the form of any documentation (yes, I really do know how to spell this word, but for some reason no matter how many times I retype it, it comes through with this spelling! Very odd!) about all of his claims to fame.

Here is a website that supports Hopkins and his claims:
www.frankhopkins.com

and here is one that debunks them:
www.horsetravelbooks.com/hidalgo.htm

Well, whatever the verdict may be about Frank Hopkins, one must admit that he was a most interesting person! And whether his stories are real or imagined... we cannot deny that they are fascinating.
