Who was the best lead actor ever in a Western? Or in other words, if you were trying to make the best Western ever, who would you cast as the lead? |

Can't believe Clint Eastwood is beating John Wayne. No one could do a Western like The Duke. I just loved him as Rooster Cogburn and he had great chemistry onscreen with Katherine Hepburn. Surprised Audie Murphy wasn't on the list since he did a lot of westerns and I recall "having the hots" for him as a child lol. Sure brings back memories of my sister and I fighting over a picture of him we cut out of a magazine. The things we did as kids. I have seen his grave site several times at Arlington Cemetery and always smile when I think back to those days. He was cute I suppose. Did have a very babyface. Okay enough said. |

So I know this is kind of an old question, but I was going through the archives and thought, "What the heck?"
Sam Elliot all the way. The deep voice, thick drawl, and wiry build just say "authentic cowboy" to me, for some reason. But maybe I've been influenced by "Conagher" and "Tombstone." In "Tombstone" he even manages to make a cheezy line like "I've still got one good arm to hold you with" sound genuine. Imagine someone like the incredibly wooden Kevin Costner delivering that line! (Ed. note: Kevin Costner is probably my least favorite actor. He even made Robin Hood look boring!)
My next pick would be Robert Duvall--excellent in just about anything. And I liked him in "Lonesome Dove."
So that's what I have to say. Keep in mind that I'm from Texas, so I speak with authority on this. [<:)]

Ethan Edwards, the ultimate anti-hero in the greatest western ever filmed (The Searchers)!

If the Duke wasn't around, I'd have to go with Tommy Lee Jones. |

Didn't see The Apostle, Christina but one of my favorites that Duvall did was "Tender Mercies". |

I voted for Clint but the more I think about it, I'm inclined to put Duvall right up there at No. 1. along with Clint. I don't think I've ever seen Duvall in a bad role. Western, non-western, you name it. Did anybody see him in "The Apostle?" That was one of the most amazing films ever.

You provided quite a flashback, WW. My father bought me tickets to the World Championship Rodeo finals in Madison Square Garden for my 12th birthday. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Roy Rogers was the "guest star." He shook my hand too. I didn't wash it for days.

I'll agree with you there, Doc. Trigger was a quite the ham... for a horse. Handsome, too, although for a less long-nosed fella, I reckon I prefer Roy. He was my Hero Cowboy when I was a kid, and in fact, he shook my hand when I was a toddler and wished me "Merry Christmas, Honey." **sigh** |

My personal vote for Best Leading Actor in a western is Trigger, thank
you very much! After that, I'd vote for Duvall and my man Clint.

Speaking of the "Singing Cowboy," if you're ever in the Los Angeles area, don't miss the Autry Museum (recently renamed the Museum of the American West). It's an excellent museum of western history, I've been there several times over the years, and every time is a great experience. My last time there, they had a very good temporary exhibit on Custer. There's always a great collection of western art, hollywood cowboy memorabilia, and historical artifacts. There's even an outdoor garden with only native western American plants. One of the really cool things is the revolver room, three walls covered with authentic Colt revolvers, enough to make a grown man cry. It's a beautiful sight.

I had to vote for Clint. I just love seeing any western that he is in!!! My husband probably would have said Gene Autrey. That's his western hero.

Actually, he would be my second choice. I'm with Susquesus on this one: John Wayne all the way! And my third choice is Clint Eastwood, but in his first role as Rowdy Yates on "Rawhide." Such a crush I had on him! |

Ok, so I voted for Sam Elliot. To me he personifies the American Cowboy better than any other actor out there, and he's been in some of the most realistic Westerns ever made like Louis L'Amour's "Conagher." It's like he doesn't even have to act, he's just a rough n tough son of a gun. Plus the mustache helps too. My second choice would be a tie between John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, both great Western actors, but both very different. |

Tom Selleck makes a better cowboy than private eye IMO. I voted for Duvall. I think he can play anything. |
