It's been a while since anybody added anything to this thread, but I was e-mailed this hilarious spoof this morning by a friend and I thought it fit perfectly here in the middle of the "Stooge" discussion. 
ne of the most talked about films of recent years,
Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Curly," depicts Jerome "Curly"
Howard's final 12 hours on earth and, by Gibson's own admission,
includes several hours' worth of extremely graphic and violent images
of Curly being repeatedly slapped, poked in the eye, conked on the
head, and other forms of torture at the hands of fellow Stooges, Moe
and Larry.
Industry insiders have predicted an opening week take of up to 30
million dollars. Those figures are all the more extraordinary given
that just one year ago Gibson was struggling to find a distributor
for a film that boasts no big-name stars and dialogue lifted entirely
from 1930s Columbia two-reelers. And, in what appears to be an omen,
the lead actor was struck by a pie during filming.
Controversy has focused on charges, mostly levelled by Shemp fan
clubs and strongly denied by Gibson, that the movie somehow blames
Shemp for Curly's death and will fuel anti-Shemp sentiment.
Those accusations have to an extent been buttressed by unguarded
comments from Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, claiming that the
success of Shemp's career as a character actor independent of the
Three Stooges is greatly exaggerated and that there is a conspiracy
aimed at proving that Shemp was really a more talented, funnier
Stooge than the others.
Gibson and his father are both Traditionalists, who have never
accepted the various reforms which, among other things, led to Shemp,
Joe Besser and "Curly" Joe DeRita being named Stooges.
Gibson has staunchly defended himself and the film against the
charges, insisting that he had never intended to trigger a "blame
game" over responsibility for Curly's death. "Curly was beaten for
our enjoyment," Gibson said. "He was wounded for our laughter and by
laughing at his wounds we are comforted and healed. That's the point
of the film. It's not about pointing fingers -- except, of course, to
poke out Curly's eyes." Gibson then added, "Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Woo woo
woo woo! Why, soytenly!" and barked like a dog before slapping
himself in the face several times.
Some pro-Shemp groups, notably the influential Amalgamated Morons
League ("We're not just morons -- we're organized!"), have argued
that while Gibson may not be anti-Shemp, his film is capable of
arousing hatred against Shemp and other later, lesser Stooges. |

Do you folks remember that goofball on the Abbott and Costello show in the 60's that went around pinching everybody and dressed up like a big kid.I think his name on the show was Stinky.Didn't he eventually become a Stooge at one point? |

Some stooges trivia for y'all.When I was a little fella in N.Y.C. way back when,they had a show on WPIX channel 11 right after school.This show was about a half hour(?) long and would have about two stooges shorties.Does anybody know the name of the host of that Three Stooges Show? What occupation did he dress up as and what name did he use that pertained to that said occupation? |

Christina, thank you for the feminine vote of confidence in the Stooges. Faith is renewed.
Can anyone recommend any good "Three Stooges" dvd's? So far I like the quality of the "Columbia Pictures Presents" line. The one I bought was entitled, "Curly Classics". It features 6 Stooge classics:
A Plumbing We Will Go- 1940
Men In Black- 1934
Micro-Phonies- 1945
Punch Drunks- 1934
Three Little Pigskins- 1934
Woman Haters- 1934
All were hilarious. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a comprehensive box set released yet. I'd shell out the appropriate amount of dollars for the "Stooge-ography" if available. |

I am that rare woman...a Three Stooges nut. I have loved them since I was about four and their films were shown on a local station every day along with the "Little Rascals." My mother once rushed into the room thinking I was hyperventilating because I started laughing so hard at one of their pie fights. To this day, a good Stooges pie fight can make me laugh until I cry. One of my all time favorite scenes:
they get into a huge clay fight in an art studio. Either Curly or Larry has clay land on his head like a hat. The other says "Here's a flower for your hat ma'am." and puts a fake flower in the lump of clay. In response, (either Larry or Curly) says "Here's mud in your eye, mister!" and smacks clay on the other guy's eye.
I also like it when Moe said in one episode, "Wake up and go to sleep."
Although I agree, Shemp and Curley Joe just didn't make it.

I feel the same way about the humor of Monty Python. Don't understand 'em, don't think they're funny. Now, Danny Kaye! All I have to do is watch "The Court Jester" and I'm off and laughing like crazy. Love "the vessel with the pestle...the brew that is true" scene!

Definately the "Three Stooges" with Curly. I agree with Susquesus, Shemp and Curly Joe (aka "Joe") just do not 'pack the gear'. Curly lends a unique insight into comedy that... Wait a minute! Here I am trying to intellectualize the "Three Stooges", what a way to spend a day off!!

Regarding the poll I must admit I went with the "Stooges". Love 'em, ever since I was knee high to a Holstein. I haven't met many women that love Moe, Larry, and Curly. They're out there, though, a precious breed.

Absolutely! They were the very best! I think we talked about them somewhere else, but it bears repeating. Lou Costello was a comic genius. My second vote would be for Laurel and Hardy. Stanley Laurel... another comic genius. Another favorite duo: Hope and Crosby.
Interestingly, I never could stand the Three Stooges. Don't know why, except that I just don't appreciate their kind of humor.
P.S. Susquesus, I think we should dub you: "The Poll-King"! Folks, shall we put up a poll to vote on how many more fun polls the Poll-King can "poll" out of his hat?
