Of the Jack Ryan films, which is your favorite? Why? Who makes the best Ryan?

I just re-read this thread, and I have a couple of observations.

In the actual novels, TSOAF happens after C&PD...Jack Ryan first meets Clark & Chavez in S America.

Although my favorite JR movie is THFRO, my favorite book is TSOAF. I have never seen this TSOAF movie, and I never will. IIRC, Morgan Freeman is in it, but I doubt if even he can save this dog. Since that other clown (who shall remain nameless) plays JR, I'm feeling queasy about the whole thing. Besides, this movie (if I understand the plot correctly) is waaay too PC for me; please correct me about the movie if I'm wrong, but the novel's villans are Muslim terrorists, based in Syria.

Heh, heh, - I'll bet he's "blue ribbon" user of Viagra at his age. Then again, - why not?

The Hunt For Red October or Clear & Present Danger. Patriot Games is more fantasy than any of the others. The IRA never, and wouldn't operate in this country. They used it for fund raising purposes in the Irish community in the larger U.S. cities.

I had to go with Red October, although I prefer Harrison Ford to Alex Baldwin. Besides, how can you go wrong with Sean Connery?

I would have chosen Patriot Games, except for the way the ending was butchered ("Hollywoodized"). Sean Bean stole the show!

I would have to say 'Clear and Present Danger', because it has two of my favorite Tom Clancy characters, Mr. Clarke and Domingo Chavez. As to the best Jack Ryan, it has to be Harrison Ford. Alec Baldwin is just too much of a 'pretty boy' to be taken seriously as a "bookworm spook".

Patriot games, was the best one i think, but i also liked the sum of all fears.

I think harrison ford is the best jack ryan, i didn't like baldwin at all.

Had to go with "Patriot Games." Loved the cast. Also, that was the first movie I watched about terrorism. Before 9/11 the Northern Ireland troubles were the only western terrorism I had been exposed to. Also loved all the high-tech gadgets and satellite technology showcased in the film.
All except "Sum of All Fears" had exceptional casts.
Of the ones I read I enjoyed "Clear and Present Danger" most.

Yeah John Clark is a cool character. I don't know about a R6 movie, but that would be really cool, I've played all the games! They could bring back Willem Dafoe as Clark, and Raymond Cruz as Ding Chavez. One of the dumb things about "The Sum of All Fears" is that Ryan meets Clark for the first time, but they met for the first time in "Clear and Present Danger!" Since "The Sum of All Fears" is a prequel, that means Clark and Ryan should already know each other in "Clear and Present Danger," but they don't. "Sum of All Fears" was a mess.

Another Jack Ryan film "Red Rabbit" is supposedly in the works.

Hmmm....you got me thinking....2 questions really, because my favorite of the films and my favorite Jack Ryan aren't the same.

I liked the Hunt for Red October, but Harrison Ford is more of what I pictured as Jack Ryan (and most definitely NOT Ben Affleck!! Ye Gods!)

But, I really like the John Clark character...is there a new movie coming out soon...I thought I heard something about Rainbow Six...???

Hunt for Red October -- no contest! Great cast -- Sean Connery,
Sam Neill, Scott Glenn! Alec Baldwin was not my vision of Jack Ryan,
but he did a good job. Harrison Ford WAS my ideal Jack Ryan, and
I liked Patriot Games (Sean Bean was terrific!) and A Clear and
Present Danger (ditto for Willem DaFoe!) We will not even dignify
That Other Movie you list with that lame-o in the title role with
more than a passing shudder.

You could have fooled me with the Lake James scene, but of course
kindly old Doc M's peepers aren't what they used to be.

Really??
That is amazing! I mean... how did they ever manage to get a submarine into that lake? I wouldn't think it would be deep enough for a sub to maneuver around in, not to mention trucking it in from the sea! (giving wide-eyed blinks)

[I'm kidding, folks!]

Side bar on this film: Near the end, when the submarine surfaces [I think it's supposed to be Maine?], that's our own Lake James! Not only Lake James, but the same location as that of LOTM's filming ... just offshore from the fort site. You can see the same island there. Check it out next time you watch!

I liked "Clear and Present Danger" the most, the scenes with the Special Ops in Columbia were awesome, plus Ding Chavez is just plain cool!

And what was up with "The Sum of All Fears"? It was supposed to be a prequel, but it totally did not fit in with the others. Just the basic technological toys used by the characters, like the palm pilot were all anachronisms. Plus there were some things with the plot which contradicted the others.
