I tuned in to the A & E channel last night to watch "The Mayor of Castorbridge." Much to my surprise and delight... Jodhi May had a major role!

Another British production, the movie is (as usual) very well done. All acting is excellent and once again, Jodhi took another step upward toward being known as a truly classy and classic actress. (She may already be there!) T.V.Guide stated that Jodhi's performance was "riveting."

The story is from a Thomas Hardy novel, and carries all of the characteristics of his themes. I won't get into the plot in case any of you want to watch it when it is shown again on...

this coming Friday, August 22nd at 9:00 pm Eastern, on A & E.

I recommend it!

*Laughs* it does look like that's what I meant .. I feared it would.. to make it clear..
Here's the whole movie in a nutshell, stop now if you dont' wanna know.. *L*

He was a Czech. Pilot instructor who , with one of his students slipped away to England to join the RAF after his country just "rolled over" to Hilter" (#1 strike) During the war he and his student become great friends but the girl his friend loves falls for him, but she has a MIA hubby..the hubby returns, he's a cripple and he has to walk away from her,(#2 strike), but the friend has found out about the affair and hates him..(#3 strike), then the friend is killed saving his life (#4), after the war he returns to Czechlaslavakia, to find the 4F train conductor has married the love he left behind (#5) and ..she's had a child by him that doesn't know him and never will (#6), even his faithful dog who does remember and still loves him.. he leaves with the child..(#7) (Are you crying yet?)
Now.. He is arrested with all of the brave survivors of the Czech RAF squadrons by the new Czech govt. in case they form the core of a cabal to overthrow the new Soviet run Regime (#8) He's imprisioned and tortured and beaten and his only friends rat him out to the guards when he forms an escape plan..(#9), his only true ally is .. get this.. a former NAZI doctor...but in the end ... he dies even with the NAZI trying to help him..(#10)

NEXT IS A SPOILER DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING............

The one thing that makes this worth watching again and again is the beautiful flying scenes... and the ending where it shows a Spitfire flying into the sunset...and his friend pulls his Spit up on his wing and tells him he'd been there all along and never left his side...and they fly off together....

Yup! That would have done it for me! Can't stand it when children or animals get hurt or die! Sounds like a good movie for me to stay away from.

Yes she has grown into a fine young woman who carried out her part in a believable fashion. All the acting was good really .. it was just so damn depressing..Like at the end of "Deep Blue World" ....Very finely done WWII Airplane movie, Spitfires and such.. great EFX..but when he even lost his dog after the war was over and he came home I was about to cry...

LOL!!

Yes, I tend to agree with you. From what I have seen, Thomas Hardy novels tend to be that way. They seem to resolve somewhat happily, but you're miserable until they get there!

But, wasn't Jodhi fine?? She was the main reason I stuck with it.

"Mayor of Castorbridge" .....I watched this a few weeks ago and may I say, along with "Legends of the Fall" and "Deep Blue World", this has to be one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. I was hoping the main character would die soon to rid people of his presence...

I saw it and I liked it. I am not a drama critic but it did manage to hold my attention for the most part--at least more than A&E's recent movies NAPOLEAN and BENEDICT ARNOLD. I am even reading the book now.

Jodhi did a good job, too.

Doesn't anyone else have a comment?
