Actually, this is TV rather than movies...

I just discovered, much to my dismay, that I missed the first episode of a new History series on the Discovery Channel. "Moments In Time" premiered last night (Wed.), with a program called "Valley Forge: The Crucible." As many of you know, I am a great fan of Gen. Washington and Valley Forge, so I quickly went to the Discovery Channel website to see when they would be showing it again.

It will be shown on Saturday, July 5th at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time.

The second part of the surprise was... Sgt. Malcolm, are you listening? They showed the 42nd, marching either onto or off of the field, with arms at rest! It was brief... but there the lads were!

Indeed!
And I even saw some "lights" from the 84th Royal Highland Emigrants!

Not I, WW. Though I very much would have liked to! The satellite connection had to temporarily go ... either that or the Internet. No contest!

Sounds like a great show ... will try to catch it sometime down the road.

Did anyone watch this? It was, I thought, very well done.

From the historian who was interviewed (Thomas Fleming)... to the archaeologist who is heading up the ongoing excavations at Valley Forge... to the actors who portrayed Washington and Von Steuben...to a very special surprise... it was very enjoyable.

It appears that everyone got their facts straight and it was clearly presented. The program opened with the army going into Valley Forge and ended with the American victory at Monmouth. The actors actually had a small amount of dialogue and handled it very well... especially Von Steuben as America's Very First "Drill Sargeant", complete with screaming in German.

The very special surprise? Well... much to my delight, someone from the Discovery channel was apparently present last October at the 225th re-enactment of Saratoga to film it, because they used footage! I recognized the Storming of the Redoubt at Bemis Heights, and the gentleman who portrayed Gen. Arnold, riding the dappled white horse. The footage was used as "generic" battle footage, as they were not dealing with Saratoga, and it worked well. Looked very real, with the large number of re-enactors who were there.

The second part of the surprise was... Sgt. Malcolm, are you listening? They showed the 42nd, marching either onto or off of the field, with arms at rest! It was brief... but there the lads were!

Anyway... good show. When they run it again, watch it!
