I have been researching the Civil War military career of my great-great-grandfather Frank Gilb, to put together a binder of information for my Dad. As part of my search for information about his unit, the 16th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (Union), I was looking for old photos that would show an accurate view of the uniform he might have worn.

Boy did I hit the jackpot! The website of The Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee, Virginia has in its collection a two volume set of absolutely amazing photos of official Union army uniforms. (Those of you who are Civil War reenactors probably already know of these, but I didn't!) The volumes are the 1860s equivalent of a modern day official catalog, with the same gentleman carefully decked out and posed for each photo, with not only the proper uniform parts, but "props" as well. I was amazed to see a shiny rubber poncho!

The photos were meticulously and beautifully hand-colored. In fact, when I first saw them my mind told me they couldn't be authentic because they were in color! Then I took the time to read the descriptive sentence about them.

So, even if you're not a re-enactor... or even if you're not particularly interested in the Civil War period... go and take a look at these amazing photos! What a treasure they are!

You can check with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). They have a form you can order online, you fill it out and send it back and they'll search for your ancestors military service or pension records. The search is free, but if they find anything they'll charge you for the photocopies. I found my ancerstors military records with NARA. He enlisted for 3 years in 1861 and was discharged in '64. Turns out he wasn't in the 2nd MD infantry, but the 2nd Potomac Home Brigade, Maryland Infantry.

If you know his name and where he was born and lived, you can search the census records online. There are many genealogical sites that have 19th century census records scanned. I was lucky enough to find a site with the 1860 census for the county my ancestor lived in and after searching awhile I found him in the 1860 census. If it's not too far you can go to the town or county he lived in and check the local history room at the public library or an archives if there is one. Search for old city directories, tax records, court records etc. Most archives have a helpful staff that can get you started. You might find it helpful to join a local geneaological society if there is one in your area. These groups are generally full of people who have been doing this for years and are full of helpful hints.

My husband's grandfather was in the Civil War. This is what the little article says about him:
Company A. 19th Virginia Infantry, Regt. BG Garnetts Brigade, Pickett's Division 11 Corps Army of Northern Virginia Stonewall Jackson Corps. Took part in Picketts Charge, Gettysburg, Pa.
July 1-3, 1863. Was one of five men out of 49 that survived the charge. Fought entire Civil War from 1861 through 1865, and was not wounded until the Battle of Cold Harbor Petersburg, Va. June 3,1864.
Then it has his picture, but he was older, he was about 67. It just shows him and three other older gentlemen shaking hands with him. Two are in uniform. I would really like to find out more about him. It is so hard because my husbands parents are dead now. All that we have about him is this picture and article, and somehow my mother-in-law had an old newspaper back when the civil War was still going on. I think that the year was 1864. I don't remember now. I have it put up because it is so fragile. It already has a bad tear in it, and I wanted to preserve it as best I could. Of course, the newspaper has nothing to do with my husband's grandfather, but it is pretty interesting to look at. Does anyone know of a site that I could go to and look up more information on him? Thanks!

Kay

My ggg? greatuncle was a captain in the 2nd Maryland Infantry. I have photocopies of some of his papers and a picture of him in civilian clothes post-war. After the war he was an engineer and active in a veterans organization. My greatuncle has a New Testament carried by another ancestor who was with the Union occupation force in New Orleans.

No, I am not fortunate enough to have any photos of him at all, let alone of him in his uniform. Sure do wish I did! You are lucky!! Do you think he is in some sort of uniform shirt? Do you know what regiment he was with? If you have the photo scanned, perhaps you could email it to someone at the Quartermaster Museum website who could help you with it. Or perhaps some re-enactors could give you some information.
