Posted - October 28 2007 : 3:29:23 PM This is not really a NEW topic, I realize; but as I'm still new to the forum, I thought I'd recommend it anyway. Fred Anderson's The War That Made America ( 2005 ) was the "companion" book to a PBS show that I see was rather poorly recieved on other forums in this site. I haven't seen it, so have no opinion.
However, I was motivated by looking at this site to start the book, which I'd recently picked up on a whim. I'm only about 1/4 into it; but already I highly recommend it to the readers of this forum as a short, concise history of the period. Others may criticise it because it doesn't go into enough detail about their own favorite aspect of the war; but that's exactly what makes it so good and accessable for this audience!
I can tell that everyone's not as passionately devoted to the history of the period as myself and others are; if you'd like a general overview that flows logically from one idea to another, this may be the best I've seen. It's only 265 pages of actual text, many of which are excellently chosen illustrations of paintings and artifacts. The language is not such as would put most readers to sleep, either.
Best of all, since this is NOT new, and has probably been discussed before - I found it on clearance at the Hastings stores in my area for $5.95 instead of the $25.95 it was when it came out! If you'd like a modern account that recognizes that the war was really between THREE competing empires, not just the French and British, fully according the Iroquois their rightful importance; and that takes into account both the causes and results of this most important and overlooked period of our history, you can't go wrong! |
