Obediah	Posted - June 10 2007 : 12:26:09 AM Well, I re-installed the demo on my laptop and added the missing .dll file...Good News: the game only take 6 minutes to load! Bad News: the game runs really slowly, as if it was in the infamous mud pit!

I have not experienced any of those problems you mention, with the exception of the missing dll ... I think that affects only Vista? Not sure, but in any case, a simple fix. The AGEod folks are masters of customer service & game support. Remarkable. The download is something like 420MBs - an eternity on my dial-up - so they burned a disk for me and sent it from France - for free. Obi, the boxed version is nearly ready for release. Also, patch 1.04 is available - lots of AI & combat model tweaks.
Obediah	Posted - June 06 2007 : 11:28:08 AM O Mighty Sachem-- Shogun is the same type of game as Total War (RTS); possibly the first of this type. It takes place in feudal Japan, naturally. And, getting back to the theme of this thread, AGEOD has now released AGEOD's American Civil War (AACW). If you liked BOA, you'll like AACW. It has the same gorgeous interface but is somewhat more complicated than BOA. HOWEVER, it also requires a whole lot more in the way of system resources. The (free) demo takes 15 minutes to load on my desktop!! Also, it flat locked up my laptop...I had to remove the battery to close down! I just found out a few minutes ago that there is a missing DLL file, which must be downloaded from a different site! BTW, the only way to get this game for now is to download it from AGEOD's website! That goes for both the demo and the full game.
richfed	Posted - November 25 2006 : 08:11:28 AM Hey RedFraggle! I am not familiar with the game Shogun, but I can tell you with all certainty that Birth of America is NOTHING like Rome: Total War. My sons are great fans of the latter, but I never could really get into that game. Anyway, BOA is much more akin to a game of chess. It is a board game adapted to the computer. If your husband is seeking fast action & high-end, real time graphics, he'll be disappointed. If he's seeking a historically accurate, beautiful to look at, thinking man's game ... he'll absolutely love this one. An excellent real-time, history based game, would be Take Command: Second Manassas. See this link: MadMinute Games If he's interested in the scope of THIS Board, there is a nifty add-on for the game called Rebels & Redcoats. It is free after purchase of Take Command. Hope that helps a little.

I know next to nothing about computer games, but my other (won't say "better"! ) half is slightly obsessed. He has a birthday coming up, but is very picky about his games. "Shogun" and "Rome: Total War" are his favorites, so if anyone out there has some advice on how "Birth of America" compares--playability, screen graphics, set-up, rules of play, anything--I'd appreciate it. I have to admit that this one totally went 'under my radar', but thankfully you guys have my back. Once I get it loaded onto my new PC (The reason I've been out-of-the-loop, since I have been tranfering a good deal of info between machines), I will have to get the updates from AGEOD. On the subject of my new PC; the first I knew of needing a new one, was when Lady Munro brought it home from Best Buy... Of course, she got it on sale, so I "saved" all kinds of money But it does burn CD/DVD, therefore I guess I can open my own pirate operation to help pay-down this newly acquired debt. On the upside, I have been able to put together a compilation CD of period music, which I will hand out to the lads (And I did a decent job on the jacket art as well). Well, I must be off to do the dishes now, and I hope that everyone is having a good Thanksgiving... YMH&OS, The Sarge
richfed	Posted - November 21 2006 : 10:39:20 AM OK, glad you mentioned that, Obediah. Just downloaded the update from the AGEOD site - updated manual, too, with lots more info. Finally figured out how to embark troops onto bateauxs & transports. This game gets better & better the more you immerse yourself in it. For me, it's a dream [albeit a minor one] come true. My 3 eldest sons & I spent days [literally] at a time playing 1776. Used to drive Elaine crazy, 'cause we had that huge map spread out all over the dining room table. Anyway, now that they're grown - and I don't live there anymore - I can play this version all by my lonesome. No mess, no fuss, either! Off this week, so I'm getting a handle on the game now. Can't help you on your Louisbourg dilemma, though, Geezer, because I've been restricting myself to the 1775 - 1783 campaign for now [after the tutorial, of course!]. Sarge, I think you'd really like this one!
Obediah	Posted - November 13 2006 : 01:02:41 AM A word of caution...if you can help it, don't buy BoA through Steam; you'll be at Steam's mercy on updates. As for the game itself, it rawks! Although I've had the game since August, I've only had the time to play 2 full games, both the complete F&IW scenario, both times as the British (I'm lazy). Once the British reinforcements start coming, I can easily conquer every piece of real estate on the whole NA continent, EXCEPT Louisbourg! Even building up massive armies and attacking in waves, all I have been able to do is cover the ground with acres of Redcoats! If anyone has the correct strategy for this little problem, please PM me!
richfed	Posted - November 12 2006 : 4:04:44 PM Finally got around to purchasing this game, and a really fine one it is. Elegantly simple. Gorgeous playing board. This is your old-timey game. A board game for computer. Anyone ever play the old Avalon Hill game 1776? This is very reminiscent of that classic. Fleets, leaders, Indians, militia, strategic towns, weather, French intervention .... Excellent scenarios, but the coup-de-grace is its campaign games. Oh! The entire French & Indian War AND the entire American Revolution!!! A great, relaxing, fun, and educational way to pass a dreary rainy weekend ... or, if your life is as exciting as mine ... ANY day, for that matter. You can purchase it easily through Amazon.com. Search: Birth of America.
