I own this DVD set and must say that while there are some issues with accuracy, I think it is a good program and I bought not only for my enjoyment, but for when I teach a class on History (working as a Teaching Assistant). Haven't read the book yet, how is the book? |

Hi Fitzhugh,
When you were at Fort Necessity, you were within "spitting distance" of Bushy Run, Hannastown, Fort Ligonier and a few other interesting places. I was born and raised raised in this area which was our Shawnee territory at one time. I visted the Heinz Museum at Pittsburgh, and their F&I exhibit was great. There is a section of the original Fort Pitt, plus the museum there is quite interesting. It is just a few blocks from the Heinz museum.
If you come by that area again, and I am there for our annual Lenni-Lenape pow-wow, or whatever, I would be glad to show you around. My Shawnee 4x great-grandfather, Willenawah (Great Eagle) was present at the battles at Fort Necessity, The Braddock Battle one year later in 1755, and at the Bushy Run battle in 1763. We Shawnees supported the French in the F&I War. Willenawah supported Chief Pontiac's Rebellion at Bushy Run. Many of my Indian and white families live in the area.

Thanks! Maybe I will be able to do that one day. This was a quick side trip on my way back from Oswego, or should I say Choueguen? I spent the night in Carlisle, then got up early and made a mad dash through Maryland to Cumberland (Wills Creek?), then Fort Necessity. I wasn't planning to stay long, but it turned out the ranger knew most of the rangers in SC, and he loved to talk about his area. I got too interested in what he was saying, and before I knew it the day was half gone. Then, by the time I got to Braddock's grave, and Joumonville Glenn the day was over. And I still had to drive home. I had planned to visit Pittsburg last winter to see the Heinz museum, but that fell through. And the gas bills from the Oswego trip just came in, so I won't be making another one this year. Next year, though, I am thinking about GE#3 at Crown Point AND William Henry in Sept. if all that stays as planned. Bob Bearor is determined that the WH event should be on the original date is spite of what the town fathers want to do. He seems to pull some weight, so we will see what happens.
It seems like the best events happen up your way. |

Fitz, you were near my baliwyck, and you didn't let me know! Damn, I could have shown you a real good time up here in Pittsburgh, and I could have covered the bail-bond, to insure we were released early
Next time you venture north, give me a heads up, and I can give you a 'cooks tour' of all of the interesting F&IW sites here in Allegheny County (Including the location of Washington's Redoubt, near Boyce Park, and the 'Golden Stump' on Frankstown Avenue which was part of the old Forbes Road). Maybe even a visit to Robert Griffing (Who lives fifteen minutes from me), could be arranged, if I have enough notice...

When I was at Fort Necessity the other day, I picked up a DVD of "When the Forest Ran Red", and I think this is probably the best of the documentaries out right now. Fred Anderson does part of the naration, along with some other pretty good historians. The French uniforms are wrong, as usual, but overall not bad.
After visiting some of the sites, I re-read the first 100 or so pages of the book. It makes a difference if you see what he is talking about. The site interpreter said that the round, split-log structure at Fort Necessity was built to keep Washington's soldiers out of the supplies, rather than to offer protection from the French. The earthworks were the acutal defense. |

Book? I have a friend who called it a "tome." I'm reading it right now. It's not the easiest thing to wade through. Thank goodness for our public library (aka free)!  |

signs that this was planned as a 13 week series, but funding was lost, delays happened, and they took what footage they had, shot some new scenes and released it as a miniseries - explains the large gaps, spotty detailing and how off some scenes looked from others, possibly shot for an entirely different show (were those apaches or abenakis??) this one had a lot of potential - at least they got somthing out... |

I was kind of disappointed with this one.While it mentions the Forbes Campaign,it ignores the battles along the way as if it were a mere stroll in the park. |
