Have you thought about a tour of Pennsylvania's F&I War sites...Jumonville Glen, Ft. Necessity, Ft. Duquesne/Ft. Pitt, Braddock's Battlefield, Ft. Ligonier, Kittanning, Bushy Run Battlefield? They are all near enough to each other, laid out right, that they could all be seen in a few days. Old Bedford Village (check the website www.OldBedfordVillage.org) would be a good place to headquarter for some of it and the site of Ft. Bedford (Raestown) is very near. I am on the Board of Directors at OBV and perhaps a F&I encampment could be put together for you. Pennsylvania is where it all started, you know.
Just a suggestion.............
And a very good one!!! Sorry to have not responded sooner ... was down for the count for a day & a half! This is a great idea, Seamus!!! I can tell you, it's one I'd plan my summer vacation around!!! A year or two ago, a similar idea was discussed with Sarah M., only in the Fort William Henry area of New York ... Both would be spectacularly informative & educational & a whole lotta fun!
This would need to be coordinated by the likes of ... of ... YOU! [seeing as how you're in PA, retired, etc.!! ]. Don't know how well either idea would go over for pure The Last of the Mohicans movie fans [in comparison with the Mohican Gatherings], but there's bound to be some intense interest in a tour of this nature. I've been to Jumonville & Fort Necessity ... would love to go to the Pittsburgh area for those locations.
Another good reason to have this? It's the stomping grounds for Doctor Mary & I might finally have the opportunity to meet her!!!
Seamus, you should develop this notion ... it might really work! |

Posted - December 02 2002 : 07:42:58 AM Hey Fitz! The town where I live is Sylacauga, which translates to Buzzard's Roost in the Creek language. When you came to Fort Toulouse, you were about an hour away. |

There is also a place in SC, on Lake Marion, called Buzzard's Roost. I didn't know there were two! |

Posted - November 28 2002 : 8:09:23 PM Sounds lovely Mr. Maclaren. I'm a good bit farther south presiding in a small town community which the Creek called "Buzzard's Roost". Doesn't sound very charming I realize but actually it is a quaint little fork in the road.
Nice to meet you and I look forward to conversing with you again.

'Tween campaigns ah keep a wee place in Fredericksburg, in the province of Virginia. 'Tis a good and growin' town, founded back in 1728 -- has several fine Scots factors, much trade wi' the auld country, and a lodge o' the Craft.
Not ta far from Pennsylvania, nor from the Carolinas either.
'Tis me honor to be, and &c., D. MacLaren |

But early planning is absolutely essential. My 2003 calendar is fast filling up! Isn't yours?

Posted - October 09 2002 : 02:07:58 AM If we do this in PA, could we make it at least a 3 or 4 day event? We could really run the gauntlet on the historical corridor and maybe have time for a little tactical.

Posted - October 04 2002 : 1:50:36 PM Hi Rich and Seamus, The proposed Hudson Valley "gathering" would go from Glen's Falls and Fort Edward and Rogers' Island to Fort William Henry, up the stunning Lake George to Fort Ticonderoga, and up to the stunning Crown Point. It's all VERY compact and would be easily managed. Our friend at Fort W.H. offered to help set it up and manage it. Ideally, this would be done around a Grand Encampment so people can hear "MAKE READY, PRESENT, FIRE" in real life, watch the Indians, the French, the Brits, etc..... It really brings the movie alive.
Cheers, Sarah

Start working on some dates early cause there are lots of French and Colonials out there to abuse and we spend a lot of the summer doing the King's work!! Pax Aye! Flags and the Sarge

This sounds great! Lots of old stuff 'round these parts, not including me, of course! Why, not too far from my modest cabin is an ancient WalMart which was constructed in 1987. If you creep up quietly, you can observe members of the Size 50 Butt Crammed Into Size 6 Stretch Pants Tribe foraging for Moon Pies.
I'll bring the squeezin's -- just tell me where to show up!

Uh-huh................just like my Rotary Club.....make a suggestion, and all of a sudden, guess who is in charge!! Shoulda kept my big mouth shut!!!!!!!
Seriously, if enough interest is out there to warrant the tremendous amount of work needed to put a tour like this together, I would be very happy to do it. I would, of course, want to enlist the assistance of other Pennsylvanians, Doc Mary, Cousins Malcolm, Many Flags, Dr. Uncle Mark, Davey Gunn, Tree Tales, Uncle Angus, and, of course, Uncle Quasi and anyone else who may wish to be involved (Lt. Edmond McKinnon!).
It sure would shake out those who are really interested in the F&I War, and not just the groupies, wouldn't it? Of course, a showing of LOTM would be necessary, because even we historian purists enjoy it immensely!
How about taking an interest finder poll, Rich?
