Posted - March 20 2005 : 12:59:07 PM There are two events in April that have to do with the French and Indian War. Since there is never much of that in the South, these are worthy of note.
First is Fort Dobbs in Statesville, NC. It was build to protect the Catawba Valley from and Cherokee and, if necessary, the French. It will be reconstructed and the first event is this April 15-17. Their web site is:http://www.fortdobbs.org/
Rich, this is straight down I-40 from Marion, so you and the boys should try to make this. My unit will be there, but I won't because they happened to pick the same weekens as the second event.
Second is the French and Indian Encampment at Fort Toulouse in Wetumpka, Alabama. This is one I just don't miss.

I was in Charleston this weekend for a wedding, and I had a chance to check out Drayton Hall and the Exchange Building. Drayton Hall is going to be great for camping. There is a LOT of open space, flat groound, and all on nice thick grass. And all this overlooking the Ashley River. I have run into some conflicts, but I be there for most of the things. I hope to see you then. |

Posted - April 21 2005 : 10:52:33 PM Hey Fitz! Looks like we've GOT to do something about coordinating daughterly visits and Fort Toulouse events. I find myself going there from time to time just to be alone with the place. Good to know you had a great time. |

Posted - April 19 2005 : 08:39:54 AM Fort Toulouse was a great event! The weather was perfect. And there was a great Indian camp. The regulars were there, along with Okwaho, Big Del and Little Del, and the two Cherokee ladies from Fort Loudoun. This would make a great site for a "Gathering", but it may be just a little too far away. I have seen some pictures of Fort Dobbs, and IMHO they have some things to work on. I made the right choice in going to Toulouse. Those or you who live near by, and didn't come (and YOU know who I mean), once again missed a great weekend! |

Posted - April 12 2005 : 12:54:40 PM I was just looking at the weather channel. It says 70's and sun! I am packing the cased bottles full of merlot now. Okwaho is bringing an ORIGINAL French fusil for me to see, so I can get some ideas on how to build mine. I think a lot of the folks who were absent last year plan to come. There should be a good crowd. This one is a lot different from the one in November.
Vive le Roi!

Looks like you're going to have great weather this weekend at Fort Toulouse. I'm not sure if I'll make it there or not...got things to do here and a visit planned to Huntsville to see my daughter. Have a great time! |

Posted - March 30 2005 : 7:12:32 PM A dancing bear you say? I seem to recall that my second-cousin, Sergeant Duncan Munro late of the 42nd RHR, mentioned once of a missive sent to Captain Patarcity of Roger's Rangers from Captain Poulharie of the Royal Rousillon Grenadiers, that spoke of a dancing bear. I think the quote was, "Captain Polter-Ditz, it saddens me to see English squatters upon the land of my master, His Most Christian Majesty, King Louis XV. I was so depressed, that it took a group of native girls singing the Te Deum for over an hour, followed by a rather poorly performing dancing bear, to raise my spirits enough to write you this missive..."

No, but we have an annoying dancing bear who's been running around here lately...he keeps leaving missives on my windowsill.

Posted - March 30 2005 : 08:30:19 AM quote: A seditious quote from a frontier rebel: To quote m'good friend and neighbor Jos. Doddridge: "Hunt the Tories, burn the Tories, whip the Tories!"
Mister Smith,
'Tis nice to see that you survived the visit of the King's Men at Ft. Henry last August. As for Messrs. Doddridge, he had better mind his words concerning the good & faithful servants of our King George III, lest the 'Tories' of the New Jersey Volunteers come to burn down his trailer park! So typical of these seditious types, when treated with the generosity of such a benevolent monarch; they spit in his eye, while they hold out their other hand to also be filled his kindness. Those frontier types would have a valid protest if they, like their coastal brethern, would have been subject to increased taxation. Not only do they live tax-free, but the land that they squatted upon (which belongs to our sovereign) was not taxed as well! Such is the sad outcome of the welfare-state.
Till we meet again on the field of battle, I do remain your most humble and loyal servant of King George...

P.S. - You too could become aquainted with the joys and adventure of shipboard living; for the King has a lovely prison-ship off of the coast of my native New Jersey, where we pack rebels in such a manner that would offend kippered herring.

Posted - March 24 2005 : 6:37:41 PM So true, good Sir. I too wish for a finish to this war, so that I may return to my previous trade of working the docks. Oh, how I do miss the many sights, smells and sounds. Except that unknown scent which was coming from the hold of a certain whaler, that I cannot forget...

Posted - March 24 2005 : 11:33:57 AM Now that General Clinton has offered amnesty to all rebels who will take an oath of allegiance to the Crown, and since even the most prominent of them are accepting it, I doubt that there are any more rebels left in the Carolinas. With Savannah, and now Charles Town returned to the British fold, the war in the South is over, and it only remains to drive those in the North into submission and this whole affair will be ended once and for all time. |

Well sir, as a loyal subject of our good King George III, I am obligated to protect your holdings from further insult. Speaking of rebels, would you know of any rebel-owned farms with livestock we could molest?

No Sir, only a humble farmer, who moved the South Carolina from Pennsylvania some 15 or so years ago, and since has had to deal with thieves, Regulators, Whigs, Indians, and rebels. Now, perhaps, stablilty will return to the land and we can once again get back to the business of farming and improving of our holdings. I have simply come to visit with my relatives who took up residence in Charles Town, and to celebrate the forthcoming peace and prosperity. |

Outstanding! I would be honored to raise a glass with you. If you don't mind drinking with a farm-burning, cattle-stealing Tory...
quote: Fitz Williams also added: Also, I have paid my money for the British Grand Ball on Friday night and had some new clothes made, so I don't want to miss that.
The British Grand Ball, you say? Sir, you must truly be a man of quality. Private Soldiers, like me self, will content ourselves with a gill of rum and some singing with our messmates
quote: Wilderness Woman then noted: Well, I am just very distressed over the fact that that silly old war moved south. Sigh. I am not going to be able to continue increasing the number of 225th Events I have attended as a spectator. As of right now, it stands at nine here in the Northern theatre. Guess it will have to remain that way. If at all possible, however, I do intend to get to Yorktown!
That is truly a shame, I was hoping to finally get to meet you at this 225th event. Oh well, looks like I'll get to see you at Yorktown...

Fitz if I were there, you wouldn't need to look for that wench! I would gladly fill in... as your sister, as I would be in need of an escort. That would be quite proper, what? |

Posted - March 22 2005 : 11:42:46 AM I will be there, either with my unit, the SC Rangers, or with the New Acquisition Militia. There has been some unpleasantness concerning the event in SC with some of the larger units pulling out. The Rangers are talking about going to Martin's Station instead. I have an invitation from the NAM to camp with them, so I sill be there. Also, I have paid my money for the British Grand Ball on Friday night and had some new clothes made, so I don't want to miss that. I even bought a black cockade to replace my white one (temporarily). The wife doesn't go to these things, so I will have to find some wench in Charles Town. |

Posted - March 22 2005 : 07:57:53 AM You are right, Fitz, there is a great deal happening in the Carolinas this year. I will be going to the 225th Siege of Charleston with my RevWar Unit, Major Timpany's Coy of the 4th Battalion New Jersey Volunteers, this coming May...

Posted - March 21 2005 : 3:59:53 PM I found it a little odd that they used the picture, but they don't have the fort build (they do have the lumber), and they have never had an event there. I guess they were looking for a good picture to draw some interest. It's the 250th of the F&I, they are "cashing in" on it. It's the 225th of the Rev War in the Carolinas and it seems that every town anywhere close to a battle site is trying to have a reenactment. We could go to an event every week. |

I'm glad you cleared that up, Fitz. I was thinking to myself, "Wow, Fort Dobbs looks alot like Fort Ligonier." The western curtain and part of the Battery Redoubt (On the far right), to be specific...

Posted - March 21 2005 : 11:36:55 AM It is April 15-17. The day to come is Saturday. The park is open to campers, and there are people there who came to camp never realizing there was an event going on. After the Saturday night meal there was a feu de joie with Indian dances, and everyone was invited, whether in 18th century dress or not. It is a LOT more laid back than the event in November, but not as big. Which is good.
As for the Fort Dobbs event, let me say that the picture associated with it came from their web site. It is NOT a picture of Fort Dobbs because it hasn't been built yet. It is currently in the beginning stages. However, there will be a lot of people there. But it is a rather nice picture showing le chien Anglais cowering behind the abatis, while le Francais bravely attack. |

Posted - March 21 2005 : 09:12:58 AM Hey Fitz! So, you'll be in my neck of the woods soon? Date for this?....WAIT! Not "asking" for a date...well, actually I am...but not THAT kinda date...SHOOT! I'll just look it up on the Fort Toulouse website. LOL! |
