GOVERNOR PATAKI SIGNS BILL CREATING COMMISSION TO
COMMEMORATE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

Governor George E. Pataki today announced that he has signed legislation into law that will create the New York State French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission - which will work to promote the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War between 2005 and 2010.

"The battles of the French and Indian War were the driving force for
inspiring the values and ideals that led to the successful drive toward American independence, and the birth of freedom and democracy in the New World," Governor Pataki said. "New York can be proud of its contribution to our Nation's storied history and the patriotic New Yorkers whose courage made our freedom a reality."

The Commission will be responsible for organizing, promoting and
implementing a major commemoration to recognize New York State's historic contribution to the war's outcome. The French and Indian war is widely seen as the preamble to the American Revolution.

Senator George D. Maziarz said, "Our history is an irreplaceable resource, and this special anniversary is an ideal time to draw attention to the French and Indian War and its legacy. Not only will the Commission help promote a greater understanding of the conflict, it will also help bring a significant amount of tourism dollars into our state by promoting a series of reenactment events."

Assemlyman Joseph Morelle said, "New York benefits from a rich history that stretches back to the first beginnings of our nation. Cultural and historical tourism is becoming more popular, and the events the Commission will produce will attract tourists from around the country. In addition, New York's schoolchildren will have a better knowledge of the French and Indian War, a war which put America on the threshold of democracy."

The primary aim of the Commission will be to plan and execute an organized series of French and Indian War reenactment tourism events, specifically highlighting the Lake George/Fort George area in 2005; Fort Bull/Fort Stanwix and Fort Ontario/Oswego in 2006; Fort William Henry/Lake George in 2007; Fort Carillon/Ticonderoga in 2008; Fort Niagara in 2009; and Fort La Presentation/Fort Levis in 2010.

The 19-member commission will be composed of the following: the
Commissioner of Economic Development or a representative (Chair); the Commissioner of the Education Department or a representative; the Commissioner of the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation; the Executive Director of the New York Independence Trail; the Executive Director of the Seaway Trail; the Executive Director of Old Fort Niagara; the Executive Director of Fort La
Presentation; the Executive Director of Fort Ticonderoga; and eleven
members of the French and Indian War reenactment community. Of this last group, three will be appointed by the Governor, three by the Speaker of the Assembly, three by the Senate Majority Leader, one by the Assembly Minority Leader, and one by the Senator Minority Leader.

The commission will focus its efforts on maximizing the cultural and
economic benefits of the upcoming anniversary for the State's tourism
industry and help New York coordinate with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario in commemorating the French and Indian War.
