Apologies if that was too much of a digression from the topic. Imagine that, me, digressing FROM politics!

Aaah - it was the lack of an accent on "si" that messed me up. "Si" with an accent on the "i" means yes, but "si" with no accent means if. So, "Si, se puede" (pretend there's an accent) DOES mean "Yes, it can be done" or "Yes, one can do it." Without the accent it is "if it can be done," which I was thinking would be more of a challenge like "[you all] bring it on!" Either way, it's a great phrase for Obama supporters. (By the way, can we put an accent on letters on this board?)

As far as getting off the subject, BW, I find that I much prefer talking about Spanish than politics these days. I have very strong political opinions, but find talking about politics to be very divisive, and rarely are opinions ever swayed. So, let's talk about Spanish and vacations--it's much more fun!

Edit by richfed ---> This topic was split off to here!

Also, I haven't had a real, travel-to-a-different-place kind of vacation for years, and in 2010 the city of Santa Fe will be 400 years old, so I'm thinking of that as a destination, and I think a knowledge of Spanish would help in appreciating the history there. Dreaming on, I could also make a foray into "Hillerman country" (the Navajo Nation) to at least see Chaco Canyon and Shiprock. And the sky, which Hillerman described at great length.

BW,
Santa Fe is a wonderful place to visit!!! It would be too expensive for me to live there and too hot, but we loved it when we were there. We were able to rent a house that overlooked the city, and I would just go out at night on the patio and just enjoy the beauty of it all. I wish that we could have stayed longer, but all good things must come to and end. Start making your plans BW. You won't regret it!!!

Love,
Kay

PS Also sorry for getting off topic, but couldn't help it.

During the presidential campaign it was a very popular phrase among Obama supporters, who translated it as "Yes, we can!" As for "Obamanos," it's a play on the Spanish word "Vamanos," meaning "let's go" -- "let's go for Obama."

As a matter of fact, Sarge, I AM working on my Spanish. At the end of high school I had a good reading knowledge of Spanish and French (along with dreadful accents and minimal speaking ability), and I've always been very annoyed with myself for letting that fade away. So, I've vowed to myself I'm going to get them back. A variation on "A mind is a terrible thing to lose," maybe, not to mention the "use it or lose it" advice for preventing Alzheimer's!

Wow...look at my state...Alabama. See that swoop of blue? That's considered the black belt. While I'm sure there are a lot of people who voted for Obama for their own reasons...I see it as racial as far as my state is concerned. You simply can't argue with that when you look at the map.

Hmmmm..... well, Obama seems to be doing a pretty fair slash job with programs and rulings Bush started. I'm still fuming about the stem cell research issue, for one. He just kicked the door back open.....

Sarge, I don't know how much Spanish you speak, but I speak quite a bit. I believe it is very common in Spanish to use the reflexive form of the verb when making a general statement and not speaking to one person specifically--like an advertisement or a campaign slogan. BW's statement, "Si se puede," as you indicated would roughly translate to, "If it can be done. . ." or "If one can do it. . .". There is no similar way of addressing people in English because we don't really use reflexive verbs. But, this grammatical form is all over billboards in hispanic countries. I think BW might be challenging "all conservatives" in a general sense. However, I don't claim to be fluent with idioms and such, and she probably is. Am I anywhere near right with the grammer, BW? And Sarge, are you ready to take on the challenge?

Anyway, I just hope that whatever changes Obama makes with economics and healthcare, they don't become so deeply entrenched that they can't be "undone." It's not that easy to get rid of programs once they are started. Wasn't Social Security supposed to be temporary?. ..!

I think folks living "bunched up" want/expect something/someone to do their bidding. Especially folks living in multistory buildings. As even BO himself said, - "Chicago & Cheyenne" are NOT the same. At the time he was referring to gun control, but it goes FAR, FAR beyond that. Back in rural Maine I was on the volunteer fire dept. - The crew holds an annual auction every August, to raise money for new trucks/equipment so the department isn't a burden on the local tax rate. The only cost to the town is fuel for the trucks and heating the station in the winter. Guess how many lefties were on the department? This sort of thing in rural America is common, - different and more independent type of folks - thank Gawd. (BTW, - we had some VERY good equipment ;))

My point exactly, Sachem. It kinda gives new definition to the term 'Group Politics', where the entitlement/victimhood-seeking class gather in clusters...

BW, I am so glad to see you working on your Spanish, since given Obama's immigration policy (or more correctly, lack of), you will need it eventually.

And by the way, I think you meant to say "Si, usted puede", since what you wrote roughly translates into "If it can" instead of "If you can"...

...You're welcome.

Two terms certainly isn't unusual, - but we're gonna try for one. In any case, retaking the house is about all that's necessary to put the brakes on this character.

Love you too, Rich! Love you too, Joyce! But oh, the counting . . . thanks for doing the math, Obediah.

Indeed, Sarge, I'll see you in 2010. And 2012. Bring it on! Si, se puede! Obamanos!

Let's see, 2 terms - 100 days = 2822 days left!!
Wilderness Woman Posted - May 05 2009 : 6:14:22 PM
Nope. Nary a one. Not that I have seen, anyway.

Well, we do have the occasional helicopter flyover after someone has robbed their local convenience store and then jumped into the Susquehanna River in a futile attempt to get away. Generally, we find his bloated body a couple of weeks later when it has washed up a few miles downstream.

Other than that.... no.... no black helicopters.

Then you don't have the black helicopters circling your house at all hours.

They use black helicopters in Binghamton, don't they?

Well, while I have not yet begun filling sandbags and stringing barbed wire, I can certainly be counted amongst those who are very unhappy about The Change. I prefer to be somewhat silent, at least on the boards, while I count the days until he is outa there.

Sorry, Mary. I still love ya, too.

Bookworm then added: In 2008 Obama carried Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

I cannot speak for the other states, but I know that Ohio was not exactly 'cleanly' won by Obama. The 500,000 'absentee' ballots (thank you Ohio, for 'No-Fault' Absentee Voting... It's offical, your state is now a 'Bannana Republic'), the majority of which ACORN submitted, were questionable at best. (Does anyone here remember the posting about my encounter with these trolls at a RevWar event in Ohio last year?) The only reason why he carried Ohio, was because the Ohio Secretary of State (who is a Democrat) allowed those ballots of dubious origin. And since Obama 'won' Ohio by only 220,000 votes, I am sure that screening those ballots would have caused Ohio to go for McCain.

Bookworm then noted: In addition, while Virginia and North Carolina are not heartland states geographically, they are certainly among the states from which our "warrior caste" hails.

Not anywhere near the majority of them; and those that do hail from Virginia and North Carolina mostly come from towns, villages and hamlets located in those red counties. (You really cannot miss them, since in both states the majority of the counties are red)

Bookworm then finished with: I'm not a Bob Dylan fan, but I can't resist quoting him here: "The times they are a-changin.'"

Oh please, please, please keep telling yourself that. I sincerly want you, and all of your kind, to believe all of what mainstream media spoonfeeds you about the 'Bluing of America'.

...For I have studied, and sucessfully applied the teachings of Sun Tzu throughout my adult life, and I will see you at the 2010 mid-term elections.

You are 100% correct MG, and as I have said before, the only thing that saved him from complete embarrasment was the 15 extra points that Sarah Palin brought to his campaign.

Sachem Rich then said: The times are always changing and they will change again. They have to, or we will see the demise of this great nation.

What I see of much of the left is a bunch of lemmings, falling for behavioral economics, willing to be tolerant of ANYTHING - right or wrong - as long as you are not disagreeing with them, disregard for the life of the unborn, accepting of Big Government handouts/crowd control ... a litany of things that I could go on and on about.

Not a day goes by where I don't look around at what passes as news and feel utter disgust. It is depressing to watch the fabric of this country erode ... a little more each day.

The times they are a 'changing ... and this time, I can smell it!

Sachem, I too share your disgust given the current state of our once-proud republic. But fear not, for you are not alone; folks like winglo, MG, myself, and many others who are currently silent (but I personally know their opinions on these subjects) have already filled sandbags, strung the razor-wire, armed the claymores, stacked magazines, and are ready to defend this perimeter together, for the belief that liberty is the solution to the human condition, should never be forfeit without a fight.

Look who we ran for prez, - a nice guy, great personal history etc. - but basically an old leftie. McCain never was anything else, he was doomed before it started - and should have been. The country swings back & forth all the time, ask Clinton. It will again, ... our way. I'm looking forward to the mid-term elections.

That "red heartland" isn't quite as red as it used to be. In 2008 Obama carried Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Bush had carried the first three plus Iowa, Indiana, and Ohio in 2004. In addition, while Virginia and North Carolina are not heartland states geographically, they are certainly among the states from which our "warrior caste" hails. They, too, moved from the Republican column in 2004 to the Democratic column in 2008.
