Anybody get the "Discovery Times Channel"? They've been playing a lot of documentaries about North Korea. These people are brainwashed and their leader is just plain nuts. They think of their leader as some sort of God and program the kids into thinking that they live in paradise. They're incredibly impoverished, human meat is sold for food. They have a million man standing army, have nukes, use chemical weapons as part of their standard operating procedure, and teach their kids that Americans are cannabilistic devils. They also seem to have ICBM's that could hit the continental US. This seems like a problem, it's like Nazi Germany all bottled up for about 50 years. What are we supposed to do with a problem like this? Seems like BIG trouble brewing.

Have the North Korean nukes gone to magic-happy land? Why aren't we hearing more about this? Has there been an agreement? Do they still want to burn the US "in an ocean of fire"? Are we trying to avoid it until the election is over or something?

No, they still got them, but they are being treated like the insignifigant little tyrants they are. You haven't heard much because the President refuses to talk with their dictator, and there by minimizes his importance/standing in the world (rightfully so, I might add). Also, Kym Jung Il is very much aware of the U.S. 'boomers' (SLBM-capable submarines) parked in his neck of the 'lake', and there is not a thing he can do about them. We do things like this to send a message, "act up and you will be spanked".

Oh I disagree. Korea is a problem, no question. Our REAL problem, from our perspective, right now, is Arabic countries and fundamentalists who have sworn to destroy us, our way of life, and our values AND our entire culture.......and have SENT PEOPLE HERE TO DO THAT and intend to continue. That is still the outstanding problem right now. Korea will wait a bit.

We don't have time now for the real problem (North Korea)because we are stuck between Iraq and a hard place.

Okay, today North Korea announced that they have converted spent nuclear fuel from their nuclear power plants into weapons grade material. They say they have a nuclear deterrent ready. The escalation continues.

CNN recently did a series of reports on the DMZ called "In The Zone". Very freaky place.
The one positive thing is that the area has become a veritable wildlife refuge, due to the nature of the conflict the area can't be developed, it hasn't been touched for 50 years.
The freaky part comes in when you see gigantic propaganda billboards on either side of the line with blaring loudspeakers extolling the virtues of this or that side's viewpoint. There's also a village right on the line and 365 days a year American and South Korean troops stare down their North Korean counterparts. They stand about 20 feet apart and just stare at each other. Day or night, rain or shine soldiers glaring at each other every freaking day. American soldiers have a minimum height requirement of six feet, in addition they do not take shelter from weather. The North Koreans may stand under a ledge but as a show of our toughness our troops stand in rain or snow and just stare the other guy down. They hate us, we do all we can to intimidate them. I just hope it's working, they're insane.
They're taught from a young age that their glorious leader was born on a magic mountain and that even though he was born in February flowers and plants began to bloom through the snow and cold. They are told that the whole world knew at that moment that a great leader had come into the world. In reality he was born in a camp in the Soviet Union.
Their glorious leader made propaganda films for his fathers regime in the 1970's, incidentally they believe that his father was God, thus he is the son of God. He decided that North Korean actors were no good so he kidnapped his favorite South Korean actress and her director husband to make films for North Korea, they later escaped back to the south.
They have also used submarines to kidnap Japanese citizens that were just hanging out on the beach so they could use them to train their spys to "act Japanese" while performing spy operations. I'm not making this stuff up, these people are nuts, they've been brainwashed, it's very, very scaaaarrrrry.

Well, fortunately for the world, I don't make or carry out US foreign policy. Therefore I can rant all I want without risking US businessmen being taken hostage or having our S. Korean embassy attacked as a result.

I would be very interested in asking the question of Colin Powell or Condoleeza Rice (especially) over a glass of wine with their hair down and off the record.

Good post Bill.Bring all the troops home especially from that mistake place called Iraq and all the other surrounding ungrateful places in the Middle East. But it won't happen because 10w30 and 10w40 is very powerful.

Maybe inform people that they should watch Discovery and History channels for info instead of Communist Broadcasting Station, Now Broadcast Communism, and Americans Broadcast Communism? They all have hammered Bush for calling that rats nest part of an axis of evil. Just as they hammered Reagan for calling the Soviet Union an evil empire. Far and away, the North Koreans are more nutso and dangerous.

I don't think there is much you can do about them short of war. Trying to negotiate with them is futile, as we learned during the Korean War peace talks. They are backed by, and encouraged by, Communist China. Take on one, you could be taking on both. Neither of which, I might add, gives a whit about human rights or any interest in our security and lifestyle. Worse yet, there is a growing move for accomodation with them on the part of the South Koreans, and a growing move to kick our tripwire forces out of South Korea. I say, pull them back home. Let the SOBs kill each other if they want. After 50 years of being willing to have our sons and daughters die (and they would) as a trip wire force up on the border to secure S. Korea, they now betray us and their own country by talking about joining with the North and kicking us out. Screw them.
We should stop policing the world and look after ourselves. Never has any gratitude been expressed, and allies we have saved and rebuilt now work against us. I say, pull back all our military support and bring them home, keep a strong military ready to protect our interests and respond only to attacks that affect our own interests. Ungrateful SOB's.
