The end of the free Sioux way was inevitable...the LBH certainly hastened that outcome by turning opinion further against the Sioux. Similar effect, but at a lesser scale, as Pearl Harbor, or WTC.
Some good Custer/LBH books include:
Lakota Noon -Greg Michno
The Custer Myth -WA Graham
Son of the Morning Star -Evan S Connel
Some well researched fiction (non Custer focused) -
Lonesome Dove series -Larry McMurtry
Hanta Yo -Ruth Beebe Hill
: : Result -
: : Sioux wiped out 5 companies of calvary, defeated a national hero, and embarassed the army.
: : USA gained in that the nation galvanized together to resolve Sioux problem and restrict them to reservations. The army, filled with resolve after the LBH, engaged in a relentless pursuit that caused the Sioux bands to scatter, lose power, have less time to hunt, etc.
: : For better or worse, depending on your perspective, the Battle of the Little Big Horn was the beginning of the end of the free Plains Sioux culture.
: Snow... I like your answer, brief and to the point.
: I am doing a research paper entitled, "Did the Indians greatest victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn also result in their ultimate defeat (as a free roaming nation)"?
: Any recommended reference work you might know of on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
